Car went in for paint Friday (3/14)

It's been 25 years since it was painted and, while it still looks good, it has a few little dents, creases and chips from garage wars and driving.  I also have the used and unpainted stock hood on it and wanted to get that matched, as well as getting rid of the LeMans stripes.

I thought seriously about painting it myself but after seeing the price of paint, decided that it was too expensive an experiment to fail, especially given my innate talent for messing up on applying finishes to things.

It'll be the same fake Nightmist Blue color (GM Indigo Blue metalic).  The shop owner said it'd be a month or two to get it done.

I'm looking forward to getting it back, only now I'll have to start cleaning all the bugs off after I've driven it, and won't be able to use it as a temporary storage shelf when it's in the garage.  Oh well.

Re: Car went in for paint Friday (3/14)

I remember when I was in high school a gallon of acrylic enamel paint was about 20 to 25 dollars a gallon. A lot more today for paint. Nobody uses that today.

I’ve had more experience using lacquer paints the “ newer” formulations. I used to really enjoy how lacquer jobs turned out, the more you shot on, the better it looked and hours of wet sanding was a must.
The water based paints seems totally alien to me!

I suppose your workbench is gone too?😁

That is an awesome color too.

Hope it turns out great, and in a timely fashion.  Nightmist is the original color of the Heap, beautiful color.  Bring it to the bash in September so we can all lean against it...LOL.

Re: Car went in for paint Friday (3/14)

Just wondering, if I can ask, what does it cost to paint a complete car in Mitchell, SD?
A complete “normal” (not ‘show’ quality) paint job here in metro NY is like $10,000 to $15,000.  And most body shops aren’t interested in working on vintage cars like ours.  They have enough work with crash repairs that is a ‘get them in, get them out’ kind of work.

No, that's still here but buried.  I'm refreshing the sealer on the garage floor while I have the space to move all my stuff around

Thanks Bob.  Don't know about the bash but I'll post pix when I get it back.

He told me it would be around $15k, maybe less.  I'm lucky that it spent most of its life in Texas and doesn't have all the rust it would have if it had been up here for most of its life.  EDIT TO ADD:  There are 3 shops in the general area that do classic cars.  I've seen the work of 2 of them and the third has a great reputation but is about 50 miles away.  The fellow in town (I've seen his work and it's excellent) didn't want to do it because he was afraid it would need a lot of rust repair, which I could not persuade him otherwise.  The shop I'm using is about 20 miles away and has done a number of classics in the area.  I've seen his work too and it's also top-notch.
