Seven classic cars including Jose and me. The rest were late model Mustangs. Neat cars, but I just don’t have anything in common with people who buy a car, put some stickers or some bolt-on doodads on it, then go to a show.
I miss my Bashers!!!
How about a MiniBash soon?

I hope that's not the case when I start attending some of the local events.

Unfortunately we are a dying breed . . . . literally 👩🦯
I personally have lost all interest in car shows. I can’t bear to look at late model Mustangs and listen to some idiot set off his remote controlled “whinney “ horn every time someone walks by the car.
At least our local cruise nights have good variety of classics and real hot rods.

Yes, the same thing at car shows here. While there are still a good number of ‘muscle” cars attending, the Hot Rod (pre-1949) crowd is getting quite thin. Most of those owners are well into their 80’s, and either are not up for a car show, or trying to sell their car, or just leaving it parked in a garage. (And, I’ll add that the prices for these cars are down right now). Things are a lot different now.

I have to admit that the scenario that we are seeing currently is the demise of the classic cars majority at shows now. Lots more newer cars are showing up, and their owners aren't like the owners of the classic cars, who put their blood, sweat and tears into restoring or modifying their cars. Very few are into doing their own work on their newer cars, be it repairing or modifying. There isn't the old standing around and talking shop about each other's cars and what or how we did this or that to our cars to improve them. Sad.
I was encouraged weekend before last though at our Spring Into Summer MCA Judged show that we put on. It is probably the only actual MCA judged shows remaining on on the West coast. We actually use MCA judging sheets, and we had a good turnout of many models and years, but I was surprised by how many early Gen 1 cars showed up to be judged. Lots of fastbacks and a couple really nice Boss 302 cars.
We aren't dead yet!

The big show of the year is just around the corner, Pismo Car Show 2000+ literally, I could walk to it! It will be interesting to see what cars shows up this year because last year they were only able to fill about 2/3 of the spaces, BUTT at over $150.00 for the weekend, and the cops issuing tickets up the kazoo I can understand why there are so many "no shows."
We used to have a real nice show in the next town from mine, 200+ cars complete with a car parade/cruz competition, BUTT there again, the insurance got to be so expensive that it was impossible for the local club to pay for everything. It was discontinued a couple years ago
Then we have the every Sat." Donuts Direlict" get together, Butt it has changed also with more and more newer cars and loud RAP CRAP music. The classics end up just collecting dust in our garages.

I think covid changed a lot of things. The one I was going to and walking around seems to have disbanded. There are others that pop up to take their place, but they just don't seem consistent and organised. I also think the businesses don't want them around like they used to.

Can't speak to smaller local shows, but Carlisle was the same as its been ever since I started going decades ago. The demographics are definitely changing, because we are all getting older. Cars built in the '90s now qualify as antiques.

We park Mustangs at our church during Mustang Week here at the beach. (It's a major Mustang deal!)
We have room for roughly 200 cars.
A couple of "establishments" have events(burnout pit...live music and such) and we park some of the overflow..
The 3 nights we parked Mustangs there were a total of....'wait-for-it'...3 classics ! (4 if you count mine!
Mine sounded the best !!...All the rest had that buzzy rice-burner OHC whirrr! Sure there were a bunch of turbos and coyotes butt they didn't sound like real Mercuh arn ! (Rant over!)
So get use to it fellas the real Mustangs are driven mostly by old guys who get out less & less.....

I read an article not log ago written by someone from Hagerty I believe. He was saying that the biggest problem faced in the classic car marketplace today is a severe shortage of professionals entering the restoration marketplace. There is a decided lack of people who understand how to work on older vehicles. I imagine most techs today don't understand how a carburetor works or how to work on one. The technology is fading in all regards. A lot of small engines are even going to EFI now, and as kids we all probably started working on dirt bikes, etc. before graduating to cars.

I got to talking to a young kid maybe in his mid 20's at the shop where I was getting the mustang alignment done. Of course , they all enjoyed checking out the mustang. Anyways the young kid said he had just bought a Chevelle. I asked to see pictures and he showed me a few. He said he wanted an older car so her could learn to become a mechanic. I was caught off guard by this because he's working a tire shop. He went on to say he just works the desk. So there may be hope yet for some of the younger enthusiasts. I told him I hope to see him at some of the local car events.

Hail Mike, I saw more classics than that driving down to San Diego Saturday, and it got wet half of the trip. True story.

My son and I were talking about this the other day. We were wondering what car shows will look like in 10 or 15 years. I live in a farming community and a lot of young kids in high school are drawn to the Trucks. Mainly for V8s and big diesel engines.

Hey Bob, If you've never been, stop in Carlsbad on the way, for a visit to the Joe Martin museum.
It's a real eye opener!

Thanks for the tip Barry, didn't know it existed. I went down the 15 to Escondido where my sister lives. Only got on the 5 down towards Mission Bay.

How about centrally located between Houston, San Antonio and Dallas? Needs to be fairly soon. Bash 22 is only 4 months away.

It's a date Bob ... and Bob.
The 67, I still haven't fitted out the shed so not a lot of movement on any cars.
September, only something major, (like a lack of money), will keep us away.

All this car show talk makes me think the MustangSteve bash might wind up being one of the largest classic Mustang shows in a few years.

I went to a fairly large show yesterday. About 200 cars. Mostly old stuff. I got invited by two different club members to come to their monthly club meeting and join their group. I asked s few questions, and they said they only allow cars 25 years or older.
Sounds like my kind of club!
Offline
I joined a local classic Mustang club once, even got to be the president. The club voted to allow late model Mustangs because of declining membership.
I quit , a majority of newer Mustang owners are A- Holes!

I went to the local club meeting today. Twenty members were there, a lot of nice car enthusiasts. The reality is, we are all getting old and the hobby is suffering as guys are no longer able to physically participate.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
