Rear bumper

Thinking about getting the rear bumper re-chromed (if I can find a place) or buying new. Looking recommendations on a good new one.

Re: Rear bumper

$150 new
$400 rechrome

Re: Rear bumper

IMO I would rechrome an original.  My father-in-law had all the chrome on his '72 Beetle and his '74 Ghia redone and it all came back beautiful.  They even fixed some damage to the Ghia rear bumper, which is a complicated multi-piece affair on that car.  I sent him a message to send me the place he used's info.  I'll post it when I get it.

Re: Rear bumper

I’d jump on 400 for a rechroming, more Like 1K  each in Canuckistan!.
Repops don’t fit like O/E, although I’ve heard good things about NPD’s offerings.

Here too.  I got a couple of quotes from reputable platers and the least expensive one was $900 just for the rear bumper.  The bumper guards (the little things that hang down on the rear gravel shield) were another $520.

Re: Rear bumper

Prices are certainly something to consider, Walt, butt (TS&T), I have looked at and even bought repop bumpers during the rebuild on the Heap.  The quality of the chrome and even the shape was so poor that I just sent them back and went to rechrome.  A good shop will do a quality job that will last for years with care and that you won't hate from the minute you install it....just sayin'.
Back in '15 I used New Age Plating in Houston, TX.  832-598-2769.  Don't know if they are still in biz but I've been very  happy with the work, and it still looks great.

Re: Rear bumper

My limited knowledge on re-chroming is that “show quality” is better, and more costly, than just re-chroming.

Re: Rear bumper

When I first redid my car decades ago I picked up some rechromed bumpers from a place that does core exchanges.  They were pretty reasonable cost wise, and the fit was pretty good because they were actually original parts, just not the ones that had come off my car specifically.  The quality was decent, and what a 17 year old could afford.

If I had it to do over again I would spend the additional money to have my car's bumpers rechromed.  Buy once, cry once.

Re: Rear bumper

Thanks all for the for the responses. I looked into some of the places that was suggested. After thinking about it, if I get the rear bumper show chromed, I'll have to do the front. The front is nice but not show chrome. I checked Auto Metal Direct, where I got my Fairlane bumpers. They have good ratings for quality fit parts, but they don't make any Mustang bumpers. I'm going to try NPD that was suggested. I think right now that's my best option now. Thanks again!

I thought that was the whole purpose of the rear bumper, protect the rear when the front end jumps up.

When they are on the car you can’t see and compare both at the same time.🤪
