Gained a little extra need space in the garage.

Kind of mustang related since I need to figure out how to start another mustang while keeping mine in the garage.

Two days I noticed the hot water tank had started to leak. Decided to call off work and fix it before it ruptured.  I went with a tankless heater. So far I have it set to hot at 140.   It got really hot in the shower and it's the further point from the heater. Thinking 110-120 may be better.

Performed all the work myself.  Really didn't take long and so far everything works like it should.  Spent some cleaning and organizing after I took the pictures.

Also currently almost done with a complete rebuild/regeared D60 King Pin axle for my son's new used truck.  Been too busy to hit any car shows this past weekend.

Nice work, what do you charge? No more worries about running out of hot water.

Thank you  It wasn't that bad of a job and I'm to code.   I got lucky when I purchased the 8g wires.  I had about one foot left over.  Cut it close!

I went with a 5.27 gpm unit because I only have a 200amp panel.  The 7.2 gpm heater requires a 300amp panel.  One shower flows roughly 2.0 gpm.   The 5.2 gpm required three double pole 30amp breakers.  The 7.2 would need four

I told my wife something has to go wrong because it went to smooth.  Sure enough I turned on the kitchen sink hot water, then the water started to slow down.  I knew it had to calcium deposits.   I got lucky here because the end of the facet can be removed.   It had a screen filter in there.   Cleaned it out and it flowed like it should.

Re: Gained a little extra need space in the garage.

Dang, that is hot.

Nice work.

For future reference, any pictures of the nameplate showing model and electrical specs?

I may need to upgrade this vintage on demand heater.

Thinking about changing over to electric…even with this house being off grid.

It’s nice to have hot water after working on the Mustang. 😁

Nice!  I set mine at 125 and have been pretty happy with it there.

Re: Gained a little extra need space in the garage.

I will probably go tankless on the next one.  Some years back I replaced my 40 year old one (at the time) just because it was really old and didn't need it to fail when I was on vacation, etc.  I was still able to get an old school style HWH, but those are no longer available.  The new style HWHs are more than twice the cost, while offering no real benefit in efficiency.  It seems a tankless is the work around.  I'd need a big one though, my HWH is 85 gallons.  I've got a 400 amp service though, so shouldn't be an issue.

I'm also wrapping up a Dana 60 rebuild.  This is a ball joint one for my '06 F250.  I kept the stock 3.73 gears, but added an E-Locker, replaced all the bearings/races/seals, and got rid of the crush sleeve (only Ford would put a crush sleeve in a Dana rear).

Re: Gained a little extra need space in the garage.

Mine is natural gas.  I can't imagine how many amps an electric one must pull.

I’m curious, what kind of "old school HWH" do you have that isn’t available anymore?
Both gas and electric tank type HWH heaters are available here in the NY area in various sizes.

All the electric water heaters sold here are now "heat pump" HWHs.  I paid less than $1,000 for my electric 85 gallon HWH.  The new ones are closer to $2,000.  At least this is what I was told when I bought the unit, which was over 10 years ago now.  Its possible the regulations have been changed since.  The idea was the heat pump ones were more efficient, but I use a system that is also more efficient, because I have a hot water generator in my geothermal heat pump tied to my hot water heater, which uses waste heat from the heat pump to heat the water.

Re: Gained a little extra need space in the garage.

Perhaps the highest rated efficiency HWH are a heat pump design.

Natural gas, propane, and electric are available in Michigan.

The tank styles have become more expensive making the demand style more appealing.

A 40 gallon tank style pushing $800 easy…overpriced to me.

I seem to remember an episode of Seinfeld where they were looking for black market shower heads. I guess hot water tanks are next. Not sure but I would think the on demand would be more efficient to heat pump depending on usage.

If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

There was a King of the Hill episode about toilets like that.  Hank made a good point.  If its 1 gallon per flush, but you have to flush it 2, 3, or in the case of Peggy 5 times; we aren't saving any water; we are just adding frustration.  It was all a scam too, the guy selling the low flow toilets was the mayor's brother or something as I recall.  I'm on well and septic system, I should be able to have whatever toilet I want.  All of mine are now pressure assist flush.  Initially expensive, but best flush you can get out of 1 gallon.

Interesting, gas, propane and electric tank type HWHs are still available in NY.  However, the instant hot HWHs are becming very popular.  Tank type HWH prices are quite high, and last maybe 10-12 years.  Warranties are a joke.

Re: Gained a little extra need space in the garage.

WOW...! I don't remember paying 500 bucks for a water heater..much less a grand. (maybe Delaware induced ?!)
Looks like I'll be changing out heating elements and yearly draining of my tank to make this puppy last longer...

I can tell you that in DE and PA at a minimum the going rate for a plumber to swap it out and bring everything up to code is typically $2,000-$2,500.

People hire plumbers to change out a water heater?

Some jurisdictions only sell to licensed tradesmen to prevent guys like us from doing simple, common sense hook ups, or for that matter even more complicated ones.

Yes. Where I live, (Washington) plumbers are required to install a water heater. I have a gas one, and it also has to be bought off by a representative from the city.
(15 years ago, I bought one at Home Depot, took it home and installed it myself. No problems in those 15 years, but when we installed a new furnace and air conditioning, we asked about what was required to replace the gas water heater - 50 gallon - and we were told that a permit was required and an install by a certified plumber.) The total cost with all the bells and whistles (expansion tank, new improved earthquake straps, etc, was $3078.00. Ain't so cheap anymore.......

Re: Gained a little extra need space in the garage.

The State…wow.

And they let any idiot pump flammable toxic carcinogenic liquid into their gas tank without a Hazmat endorsement?

Stupid people shouldn’t breathe Ron…I know I fall in this category occasionally myself.

So…the city will take full responsibility of any mishaps during an earthquake if installed per their code standards?    I highly doubt it.

I totally respect and appreciate all tradespeople due to the fact they learned either at school or OJT.

I agree some people probably shouldn’t watch social media and remodel their homes too…especially when working with gas whether natural or LPG.

Re: Gained a little extra need space in the garage.

Around here changing a HWH requires a permit.  I don't know if a homeowner can pull that permit or not (many permits you can pull as a homeowner).  My guess would be that if it involves gas the answer would be no.  You might be able to pull a permit yourself on a electric HWH (you can generally do your own plumbing and electric work is inspected by an independent 3rd party agency).  I replaced my own HWH without a permit because frankly I don't need the County involved.  The only concern would be if I went to sell the house and they noticed the HWH was changed on the home inspection and no permit was pulled.  At which point I imagine you could just hire a plumber to certify the installation.  Doesn't matter to me, I'm never selling my house to anyone other than family.

Now the thing is, when a plumber does the job they pull a permit, but they self-certify the installation.  Get that?  No one from the County ever comes out to look at it.  Basically the permit is a money grab.  I guarantee that if there was something that went wrong the County would put all responsibility on the plumber, because the plumber is carrying insurance.

Re: Gained a little extra need space in the garage.

In my community, one can’t change a light switch w/o a licensed electrician, or change a faucet washer w/o a licensed plumber.  These restrictions are often ignored by DIY’ers.  However, there are people that have no abilities to perform these tasks, so they pay.
