First real drive in the 66 today

The car is awesome.  I put right at 25 miles on it without any hiccups occurring.  Once I get the camber set correctly on the front and get my electrical outlets installed, this baby is ready for the road.

And the new Vintage Air in-dash HVAC system blows very strong air and makes it cold.  I am very impressed.

Only concern is oil pressure at idle gets pretty low, under 20 PSI, but goes up to 30 or more at speed.  Temperature gauge reads right at 195, which is what the mechanical thermostat is set for.

This thing can smoke the tires all the way through third gear now.

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

Congrats!  How do like the TKO so far?  The pressure seems a little low but a lot depends on how K.C. set up the bearings, etc.  Can you confirm with an analog gauge to ensure that your electronics are calibrated correctly?

I look forward to my first real drive someday.

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

The TKO, being all brand new, is a little notchy so far, but it makes zero noise and I am not afraid it will blow up.  There are two spring-loaded detents on the shifter.  I am wondering if I loosen them 1/2 turn the shifter might be easier to move.

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

When I put a TKO in the Cobra it was a little stiff at first.  After some miles it really felt good.  I used the standard Tremec shifter and the detents weren't too bad.  Did the shifter handle end up fitting OK?

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

Don't run out and buy any Dynomax VT mufflers just yet.  My flowmaster 50's were alot quieter at cruise.  Plus they did not rattle.

Congrats on the first drive. Let us know what kind of gas mileage you are getting after you run a few tankfuls through it, next week maybe. ;)

The 90 GT that I sold to Josh went to 10 psi at idle every day of it's life for over 160K miles...and  is still do so and running fine.

I've been told that 30 psi or so off idle  and  10 at idle  is not  uncommon for an SBF.  I would expect more from a high scoot monster like you have butt (TS&T), if they clearanced the mains  and rods  for hard work then oil pressure will suffer a bit, I think.

If it comes up right off idle, holds steady at speed, and  doesn't tend to drop under load...well, I'd call the builder and ax 'em but prolly wouldn't worry too much.

All my congrats Steve, on a succesful thrash.  See ya soon.

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

MS- Did you install the oil pump or Keith Craft?  They built my 427 very similar to yours except no aluminum block of course.  I went with the Melling blue printed oil pump and it is adjustable.

Was also curious how the idle and cam sounds?  i think I have the same cam as you in my 427w.

Of course I still have my car on the rotissiere so it will be awhile before I get to hear mine.

I am thinking about going with the Fast EZ EFI 2.0 and hide all the wires so it looks carbed.

Anybody else running the Fast ex efi 2.0 yet?

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

In your climate 5-50 oil is what you should be using, that will bring the idle psi up .
I run 5-50 synthetic here during the driving season and my idle pressure is never below 35 pounds when hot.
90% of the 5.0 boys up here run that oil as well.

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

Oil pressure runs 50 psi cold at idle.  37 psi at 60mph and about 17 at idle when fully warmed up.  I used an M83HV melling high volume pump.  No clattering noises, so I guess it is OK.

Got the alignment done this morning.

Installed a 70 Mustang pinion snubber on the car yesterday.  That did away with 90% of wheel hop.  BIG improvement!  I took a brand new stock 66 rubber bump pad and cut it to 1/2 thickness then mounted the snubber housing off the 70 with no ruber piece on top.  Apparently it does work!  Can't wait until I get the glass rear springs on, but that will have to wait until after the trip.

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

Could be some unburned fuel bypassed into the oil when you were fighting ignition problems.  You may find that pressure comes up a bit after your first oil change.  But your description of cold and warm performance sounds OK so I don't think I would change anything like viscosity.  You only need enough pressure to protect the engine and excessive pressure is a parasitic drain and extra load on the distributor gear.  I wonder how much increased exhast noise is due to the mufflers or the fact that you are running 76 more cubic inches are maybe a point or so of increased compression.  You have a bigger bang to contain.

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

Chased a horrific exhaust vibration when idling.  I put the car up on the lift while it was running and the mufflers are rattling VERY LOUD.  It is embarrasing to pull up next to someone at a light.

They are not rattling because they are poorly mounted or loose or anything.  They are rattling INSIDE the mufflers.

I may have to exercise my 100% satisfaction guarantee on these babies.  It is just so darned much work to remove them, though.

Re: First real drive in the 66 today

Congratulations Steve great you got  the 66 back on the Road

I Chased vibrations from my exhaust for weeks,(tailpipes rattling at idle) as you say it's embarrassing when stopped at a light idling, now I'm over making all my Adjustments (with a few Mistakes along the way
Car is running awesome ,just in time to put it away for the winter.

Good for you , Are you Taking it to the Bash??
