Sometimes you need to be flexible in your plans, fer instance I've collected the parts, and started to do a narrowed 8.8 swap fer Miss May.
Then MustangSteve sent me a link to a DFW area Craig'slist add. For this; "Rebuilt 8.8 Ford rear axle. 4.10 Posi w/ 31 spline axles. Comes with the 9 inch Torino axle bearing housings. Rear originally from F150". Pro built. $600 I called the seller (Tim) to get some info on how it was done. Built by a old timer in Ft Worth who was closing shop. Tim bought it for his 55. As it turns out a 55 Chevy with stock rear springs needs a minium of 58" for the reat axle. This 8.8. at 57" is too narrow, though just about right for a 65-66 Mustang. I had no intention of really buying it, as I'd have to change rear axle gear ratio, and bla, bla, bla. Not to mention getting it from Dallas to Florida. Then Tim said it had disc brakes included, and we got to talking about Grapevine where I was raised and Tim now has a house. Getting to the point, We made a deal on the rear, and I'm buying it.
Now IDK wheather to thank MS or not, for sending me the Craig'slist add link. However I do wish he'd hurry up and figure a way to send my autographed hood back to me, cos this rear needs to travel with it.(Disregard date stamp on photo)

Jamie I have an idea for your son's Mustang rear, want an 8.8 kit?? I have one in my garrage that is't going to be used real soon.

Looks like a good deal, even with the cost of another gearset.
Considering the distribution of our forum members, maybe we should consider establishing a ruckering network for moving parts around the country. (Look up ruckering on the net, ignore the fraternity reference).

Gearset won't be a problem as I have on hand 3.27 and 3.55 8.8 gearsets.
I betcha my fancy aluminum driveshaft ain't gonn fit anymore though.
Urban Dictionary; RuckeringThe process of pledging a fraternity during your junior year of college with the sole purpose of luring freshman girls back to your apartment with a cheesy pick-up line
Nooo, that can't be it,
My Tractor Forum.com; Ruckering is defined as the transportation of machinery usually for free.
Pottering is defined as the temporary storage of equipment usually for free.
An example would be if someone were to win a item on ebay, someone else who is already driving from point A to point B would load it up and haul it either for free
or for a nominal fee.
Are there some people here that will do either rucker or potter for other members?
Yeah thats gotta be it. I know we have to have some pottery ruckerz on the FYI Forum.

With the Torino large bearing end flanges, I take it that the disc brake assemblies for the rear end are from an Explorer?

I asked Tim if the Caliper mounts fit for sure, he said that they did. Next time I talk to him I'll have to ask what they're from. Though you (UltraSteve) would probably know best.

Somebody pick it up and I'll get it from you to hold it here with the hood for Corky.

How far is the pinion offset from center? Is there any risk with the driveshaft hitting the hump? Or is what I see towards the left at the differential some sort of bracket?

Pinion iz centered. Even tough the right side looks longer, notice both axles are the same length. I dont think its a bracket, more likely a sticker of some sort??

The more I looked at it I wasn't sure but from where the ring gear is the pinion has to be off to the right and therefore centered. That would be a wild angle if it was off to the left. In the pic on my lousy screen it looks like the pinion flange at first.

Corky, I'm still thinking on the 8.8....I really need to see how the car sits when I get glass, seats, water and gas in it, and then maybe 2 or 3 people. Crossing my fingers what I got will work. Right now just trying to get this darn wiring wrapped up, or at least close enough to fire it up and assemble the interior!

If the discs are Ford then I figure it's probably Explorer brakes. I don't know of any other Ford factory discs that would bolt up to those flanges. If it's something aftermarket or possibly if some GM calipers would bolt up....Who knows?
Are the axles aftermarket or stock Ford axles that have been shortened and resplined? If it's the latter and if the splines have not been re-hardened then the splines will likely not last. The axles are induction hardened. This process hardens the surface and a few fractions of an inch inward towards the center. The core remains unhardened. This makes a tuff axle but one that also has some degree to flex.
Cutting down an axle and then cutting new splines removes (or at least greatly reduces) the induction hardening process. If the new splines of a resplined axle are not re-hardened, chances are very great they won't last.

Corky, you think that hood would fit in the back of my truck? Not sure how else I could get it to ya. But if I'm headed that way and it fits, let's do it!!
