Not professional but just had my 32nd anniversary with the local power company. Three years in the power station mostly as a maintaince electrician. Fifteen years in the field as a controls technician. Now I'm inside as a Transmission Operator.

Thirty-seven years power system operations (Dispatcher). I operated distribution and transmission systems from 4kV to 500kV, dispatched hydro/oil/gas/coal and combined cycle generation and spent a couple of years as a trainer for new operators/dispatchers. Also did some power marketing when the industry went to hell...hated every minute of it.
I learned DC when I wired my first vehicle....a knee-action Schwin...when I was six. Found a ball of bell wire, conned my Dad out of a roll of electrical tape and a couple of "D" cells and installed lights on the bike. Made switches by slipping one wire under the other. Worked so well that I still use that method on the Mustang...LOL.
Birdman, I saw one of your posts that said you were going overseas, what are you building and where, if you can say. If I had to guess, I'd say gas fired combined cycle or just gas plants...cheap and dirty and quick to set-up.

Simple cycle? They don't do combined cycle over there? Guess they have so much gas they don't have to worry about efficiency?

I spent thirty years putting control systems in chemical plants, including boiler houses. Once I got to be Project Manager for a twin train cogeneration project using G.E. Turbines with waste heat boilers and auxilary fire. Total 23MW. Done controls for process fired heaters on most of the projects. Later years did many safety systems. Most projects included motor controls.

I spent the first 20 years working as an electrician doing commercial, industrial, and high end residential work. I spent time driving a service truck and running jobs. Trained by the IBEW and carry a journeyman license for the great State of Texas. Moved into pipeline maintenance and operations on petro chemical lines years ago. Learned about valves, motor operated valves, pumps, pump motors, the PLC’s at our stations, Omni flow computers, protocol inverters, serial to Ethernet converters, and SCADA systems. I was promoted to Operations Supervisor earlier this year. The main tool of choice now is a computer, it will take some getting used to. But, I will keep my ticket and my license, too many years in construction and wondering when the gravy train will end.
