I have a 66 coupe that will need an exhaust system soon, I hope. It will be the dual seup which exits through the rear valence panel (like th GT). Anybody have suggestions on a kit or should I go to a shop and have them make it? Any suggestions as to mufflers - don't want loud but noticeable if standing behind the car. Is that kind of understandable?

Check with other owners of older cars in your area and you often find a muffler shop that has a good reputation for custom bending - which is usually not a chain store but sometimes they have a really good person so don't count them out. I had my 66 done this way originally and it was relatively cheap and the work was good. The muffler shop often has some preferred brands of mufflers so it is a good idea to start with them on recommendations.
But - before you do anything - make sure that you replace the rear brake hose with the hose designed for dual exaust. I think the 69 big block is one of the better but the 66 style will work. I think that the 69 hose is cheaper for some reason. With the original single exaust brake hose, no matter how hard they try, they cannot twist the pipe around the axle and avoid the brake hose - on a hard bump, the axle will come up and smack the exhaust and can break the hose or bracket. My exhaust pipe had a dent 1" deep where it hit so I know it happens. Even if someone tells you that they were able to do it on their car with the single exhaust hose, for safety sake put on the right hose.
Are you running headers, shorties, or original manifolds?

Have not tried it myself, but Al McGee just bought a Scott Drake all original dual setup from Buzek. His report was that everything fit just perfect.
I used a JBA kit on my 66 427W. I bought their headers, H-pipe and complete 2-1/2" dual exhaust kit. Everything fit like a glove except their H-pipe. There was no way that pipe was going on the car without removal of the tranny crossmember/floor support beam.

Thanks for the info. I am currently rebuilding the rear end and changed over the brake lines, hose and relocated the bracket. Glasers mustang barn has a pre-bent line that will go from the long line from the front of the car and relocate it over to one side for exhaust clearance. Made it a little easier. There are two shops close by who do custom exhaust I will check with them.

For a cool(er) sound skip the X/H pipe......although they DO help stabilize the exhaust system....they tend to mix/blend the sound and you don't get the full rumpity-rump sound from the back. Heard one guy say..."as much money as I have in this engine and the cam.......I want to hear it every time I crank it up!"
Jus'say'in!!

I wrestled with the same question. I went with the small reputable shop that gave the quality and workmanship I was looking for. When I compared the kit price and the shop price in the end it wasnt to far apart and I got the personal attention to detail on my dual exhaust system for my '69 Coupe. When he got to the part where the mufflers were about to be welded on, he let me listen to several different makes on my car and I settled in on Magnaflows. Good Luck.

You are being officially ignored on the muffler issue.

I've "heard" of some old(er) fuddy-duddy type fellers go with the hush quiet of a Cadallick muff!

Now Sal, we all know you cannot hear anything over those straight pipes on your car.

In my opinion unless you have a lift and welder at home it's not worth the hassle to buy a kit and wrestle around with it! Around here exhaust shops are pretty reasonable!

I highly recommend contacting the Buzek brothers for a dual exhaust system from Scott Drake. I have completed nine restorations (hobbyist) and this was the first time the exhaust went smooth. fit was Great! No surprises. I converted from single to dual exhaust. You will need to move the brake line bracket about 10 inches and there are videos on how to do this.

I installed the 2" dual exhaust sytem from Mustang's Umlimited several years ago but let a local muffler shop do from the hearders to the mufflers w/an H-pipe. It is trickey trying to get everything lined up by yourself.
As GPatrick indicates, pay attention to the flexible brake line clearance to the rear end.
