I had the same thing, my exhaust was mounted from the hanger too ridge. I changed to a softer hanger and now I can have a conversation in the car!

More than likely the "blowmasters" are the problem. Try my idea of replacing just ONE of the muffs with a Dynaflow or something and see if the drone stops...... butt steel have that healthy skreet rod sound.

After four sets of droning mufflers I found the Walker Quiet Flow at Summit. They still have a healthy sound but no drone and no noise at highway cruise.
Flowmaster 50's I used to have with the previous 351engine had zero drone and were quiet at cruise.
Gibsons and some name brand mufflers with a spring loaded flapper valve about drove me crazy with drone on the trip to Tennessee from Tx.
Apparently, every system is a little different.
I did notice when I followed too close to Buzek even the Quiet flow started to drone, or maybe it was combined harmonics of his car and mine. When I got farther away from his car, it went away. I thought that was interesting but cannot explain it.

I had bad drone on my fastback and tried a number of diff mufflers. The sound energy was between 55 and 70 mph in 5th. I put on these dynomax vt and there is minor "drone" is between 58 and 60 MPH only with windows up. The little flap did rattle at idle but went away after about 500 miles. My car is low powered 4barrel (275-300 hp). Steve tried these mufflers and on his high hp 427, the car had three bad rattles. They were very high and didn't go away until he swore alot and took the mufflers off. Then two of the muffler rattles went away. There is still a bad rattle emiting from the front driver side seat.

I have had very good luck with these and they are priced very nice, basically Flo-Pro makes a knock-off of several popular mufflers, this one is very cloes to the Magna-flow XL muffler at half the cost.

MS, regarding your "Buzik Muzik" (drone), I had a friend years ago who also had a Harley. If we rode side by side, at a constant speed, we would get a reverberating sounding drone. One of us could drop back 15 or 20 feet and it would go away. So, it just happens.
Later.

Buzek Muzek... LOL Gotta tell Glen about this new pollution of his. Interesting phenomenon, though.

Especially if you have an "H" or "X" pipe, the two sides of the exhaust system, just like two tines of a tuning fork, vibrate in the same frequency as the other. It has to do with the frequency of the exhaust pulses, and the sameness of the two exhaust legs. Solution [as Ford did with the foxbody 5.0's] is to use different size mufflers, other wise make the leggs differnt lengths, or install quarter wave diffusers of the proper length.

I only have had only two 65's to compare, so the data is limited: coupe with 2.25" custom bent with h-pipe and super turbos and a fastback with 2.5" Magnaflow exhaust with X-pipe. To my ear (and sanity, haha), the former was better in all regards. I swapped out the Magnaflow mufflers on the fastback for Dynomax super turbos, and while improved, I still prefer the exhaust in the coupé. I'm not sure if this can be attributed to the exhaust diameter, h-pipe vs x-pipe, or coupe vs fastback. My guess is it is probably a bit of each. If I were to do it again with the fastback I'd probably go with the same diameter and configuration I had in the coupe, if for no other reason than a bit better clearance and slightly less cost. Good luck!

My 65 has a bone stock 289 with stock 2.25 GT exhaust. It does have flowmaster 40's on it. There is no drone at any speed or rpm. I have also seen some reference to the relationship of firing order and drone. Those with the HO firing order seem to notice the drone more.

I have a slightly built 302 with the magnaflow's with no Drone. They are louder than I like. But after I switched from 4.56 Gear down to 3.25s that helped and then add a T5 made it really toned down.

I am curious if the same muffler in a different position fore or aft would make a difference at which RPM the drone would occur, but I'm not well versed in harmonics.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
