You knew it was coming...

Electric AC compressor to go along with your electric power steering pump.  Cool!  (no pun intended)
I wonder how big an alternator that thing needs?

Re: You knew it was coming...

Masterflux makes that compressor.

Looks great for those of us who do not like to add more pullies and try to get them aligned.

How big is it?  Where would I put it if it won't fit in the engine compartment - maybe the passenger foot well:-)

Re: You knew it was coming...

Glad I haven't put AC in yet.  If I wait another 23 years who knows what they'll come up with..

Re: You knew it was coming...

They recommend mounting it where it has "constant airflow"

"Ideal position would be inside the front fenders or lower sub-
frame where there is a constant flow of air."

Too bad it can't be put in the trunk, but then you'd have AC lines running from the back to the front. Also I wonder how long the pump and electric controller will last?

Re: You knew it was coming...

Looka alot like the compressors used in residential systems.

Re: You knew it was coming...

Is that the condenser they show with it?  Or does it have a normal type one in front of the radiator?

Re: You knew it was coming...

Since it needs constant airflow, mount it on the bumper and bungy cord it to the grill!! Maybe a hood ornament?

That is the controller box for the compressor only.  Theres a circuit board, and one way diodes, and a bunch of capacitors in there.   Those things MUST have a parallel flow condensor, and they can run off of 134A or 404a.   Not worth the effort at the moment.   With the advancement of electrical cars, those will get better and more effecient, in time.

Don't give 6sally6 any ideas like that!

Re: You knew it was coming...

I think 6sally6 already has plans to show up at the bash with an electric compressor bungied to his front bumper.  That's why he is being so quiet.

Re: You knew it was coming...

This is a much easier solution; no condensor to mount or lines to run.

Just need a long extension cord.

If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

No, no ....only need an inverter to convert 12v to 120v.

Re: You knew it was coming...

Trunk mount with a small fan pushing air across it?

Re: You knew it was coming...

Take those fake vents in front of the rear wheels and open them up. Get a couple of custom radiators made to fit. Somw custom refrig piping, sone sheetmetal ductwork, AC in waste space.

Re: You knew it was coming...

Electric compressors have been around for a while.  Sanden has a couple of different versions to choose from and I have actually seen them being built in Japan.  To my knowledge there is still not a generic version but still built for some OEM's, found on Hybrid vehicles, one of them being a Honda hybrid, not sure of model.  Could do some digging if someone is interested.

Re: You knew it was coming...

Just got in from the fire pit. It's a sweltering 58 degrees here!!  About that ac.....I was thinking about mounting the compressor under the car and powering it with a belt around the driveshaft.  No ugly crap under the hood!! What a y'all thank??

A number of street rods have gone that route, Mike.  I have no first hand experience with it but there's no reason it won't work as long as you aren't worried about being stuck in stop-n'-go traffic on a hot day.

Re: You knew it was coming...

Even in stop and go traffic I'd bet the temperature under the car is less than it is under the hood, especially if the road is concrete.  So long as you have continuous airflow over the condensor I imagine it would be fine.

Re: You knew it was coming...

But if he powers the compressor off the driveshaft, it's not gonna turn much in stop and go traffic.
I've only seen alternators driven off the driveshaft, not A/C...
