Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

It's finally reached the point that I have to increase security at the JKB estate.
The most recent "event" consisted of someone helpling themselves to items Mrs JKB had adorning her flower beds.
With said flower beds near the mustang storage vault, I can no longer wait for them to help themselves to some blue oval items.
So, I'm considering a camera system to keep an eye on things an potentially stomping a mud hole in the perps.....

Anyone have recent experience with a camera install who can offer a recommendation?  I know "some" forum members do/have these, just can't remember the specifics or point of purchase.

I'd like a wireless, IR system consisting of 6 camera's minimum.  I saw a system at HB.....just not sure of the quality.

Last, the easier the install the better for me........unless the system comes with "camera install for dumb JKB" instructions...

Thanks....

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

Look at the Lorex cameras on Amazon. Everything you might want except really low price. Most security camera systems these days are designed for DIY install. If you can rebuild a Mustang, you can install security cameras.

The worst part about a thief is we usually know them somehow. So don't mention to anyone, why or what you're doing, or you may never find out who's stealing.

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

Josh do your self a favor and install a wired system!  They can be a pain to install but are WAAAAAY less trouble in the long run!  Setting up the wireless can be challenging and keeping them all connected is worse.  I have a friend who works for a  security company and he recommends wired!!
here is the system I have.  ZERO problems!!

You may be right.
Unless I install carera's in the middle of the night, someone living here in sleepy hollow is gonna see me installing these and then spread the word.

Thanks

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

the wife installed a camera that is strapped to a tree. it takes pics on a SD card. It works on batteries. It also takes night vision pics.  With that camera, she takes the SD card out one a week and looks at the footage. Its motion activated so it only kicks on when there is motion in front of it. we are able to see if anyone comes down our driveway, and thier license plate, etc. It also rings to an external device inside the house when the motion sensor goes off so that we know someone or something passed in front of that tree in our driveway. no one even knows its there.  I have several others  in the backyard as well.  This is only part of our security system. It doesn't prevent someone from coming onto the property, nor does it provide any real security. it just provides pics of proof someone came onto the property.

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

Security system is sort of a misnomer.  Its really an observation system, kind of like how a home "security system" is an alert system.  My real security system is in my nightstand and was built by Beretta.  It provides security by punching round holes of 0.40" diameter in the threat.  Should it not be adquate I've considerable redundancy in a vault.

I would say just make sure that whatever camera setup you use produces images clear enough for an ID.  Technology has improved considerably since I last had need to that, but when I did the images were only enough to show two guys breaking into our office to steal change from the vending machines.  They broke two pieces of glass at a cost of about $1,000 to steal maybe $20 worth of change.  Bringing me to my next point: don't smoke crack.

I like marks idea even if you were to use a video system. Cameras usually take higher resulation pictures than video, which supports what TKO states below. And as he states its good for night pictures.

Kinda reminds me of a funny story. When I was younger a friend was dating a girl that carried a 45 in her purse. When I asked her why she doesn't carrier something smaller and lighter like a 25 this was her answer. If I'm alone in an ally at night and a man is coming at me, I pull out a 25 cal. and fire at him. If I miss he is going to keep coming. If I pull out a 45 cal. and fire at him and miss, he is going to get down on his knees and thank god I did.
Now thats a security system and logic you can't argue with.

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

THanks all but, I'm only interested in those who have and are using, a camera system. Before I spend money and time installing one, I want to make a well informed decision.  Thanks Hornman, Mark and T for the suggestions.

I have what Mark suggests but isn't feasible at my home. Works well at my deer lease though.

As for weapons.... that's all well and good if you're home when something is happening.........  I simply want to capture what's taking place when we're away or when the dirt rats get active late at night.  A quality videio will help me or Johnny Law ID those who decided to get stupid on my property.

Additional inputs from those currenlty using a camera system is appreciated...

So, then I'd have "full motion video"..............thanks for making me laugh......not sure if a camera  would work well on my Boston......

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

Seems to me that it would be to your advantage if everyone in your hood sees you installing a camera system.  Cameras are little more than a deterrent anyway.  Too bad they don't market cameras that look like 50 caliber machine guns with some kind of sound effects if motion activated.
Best,
Al

Liked that idea and I of course had to Goolge it, but the stuff I found looks like WWII or earlier stuff, but can probably be modified, digitalized, network connected and made to make a terrible sound with the right audio add on:

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

How about a motion acitvated recoding of a couple of vicious , rabid dogs over some well placed loud speakers.
Getting bit in the A$$ by a Rotwieler is a fairly good deterrant.

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

I would be more concerned with Theft Prevention and Family Safety than Theif Apprehension.

You will successfully have a grainy video of a figure in the dark with a Hoodie covering their face who looks like a thousand other kids in the hood.

"Johnny Law" has time to hunt down thieves in your neighborhood?

You going to take time off from work to go to court for some missing mustang parts?

How much jail time will a thief get anyway? if any?

Lawyers will tear  you apart when they find you spent money on just catching a thief (entrapment) if they discover a lack of locks, deadbolts,  alarm system, outdoor flood lighting, no trespassing signs, no solicitation signs, multiple highly visible alarm system warning signs on lawn, multiple highly visible alarm system warning signs on windows, etc.  Do you already have these measures in place?

And what if you are successful catching one thief,  what about the next thief?  after all, crackheads have friends too.

You want to make sure you spend your money wisely on a good video surviellance system on catching one thief, when your money would be much more wisely spent on preventing any theft by any thief and protecting your family when you are not home and not just material possessions that could easily be replaced with the proper  home owners insurance policy.

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

All joking aside one of the best ways to discourage a thief is a barking dog. Cameras will give you something to watch after your stuff is gone. Before investing a lot of loot into video spend some bucks on securing your garage so they can't get in in the first place. Then some well placed motion activated alarms with cameras. I have a wireless system that I can access via my I phone. BTW I installed it after the would be thrives were discouraged from entering by a 100 lb yellow lab that barks but does not bite.

Re: Somewhat Mustang related.....seeking inputs/advice

IP wireless cameras are cheap and reliable and can be installed anywhere indoor or out.  They are easy to setup and can be had w/ motion activation and can take pictures in daylight or in darkness via infrared.  They can be configured to send pictures or video to your email account.  Some also offer two way audio.  If a thief or mischief maker walks thru a door, his picture or video is sent to your email account before he can even make it to the camera (if he sees it).
