Trying out American Autowire

Anna's 66 Convertible needs all new wiring, so I decided to step up and modernize the whole thing. I've seen where others have gone down this path and I helped my neighbor install same company's wiring into a 55 Cheby.  The only thing missing from this kit is the wiring for the Convertible top. As much as I searched on their website I couldn't find any discussion on Wiring needed for the pump motor.
Anyone else install this into convertible, what did you do?
BTW I am impressed that this kit came with all new switches and such for the dashboard.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

This is the best way to go, just replace everything. I had  to have Mr. Tim come over and help.  I found that wiring schematics were different color codes for my 65-66 mid year mix of parts. Tim would hold my hand as I connected black wires to red wires.     I call it the smoke test.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

I think the AAW kit for my 68 came with the wiring for the top. Have you called customer service, they are very helpful as well as being friendly even after numerous calls.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

Thanks for starting this thread.  I'm going to be installing the same kit in my 64.5 vert in the next few months.  Looking forward to watching your installation and learning how to do it!

Re: Trying out American Autowire

It's been a few years since I did this mod but you may be correct.
There is a fusible link from the solenoid  then a heavy gauge wire to the top control switch then the wires to the top motor. For the life of I can't remember if that wiring was included, the  more I think of it it seems not in the kit. A call to the tech line at AAW is still the best bet.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

Nice kit, I used it on mine. It would be nice if they had a schematic for trouble shooting purposes. Maybe they do now.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

Rudi hit it, Ed.  The top wiring was a simple add-on with a fuse or fusible link right off of the batt side of the solenoid.  Then some 10ga to the switch and from there to the top pump.  No relay originally but it wouldn't be hard to build a relay circuit to do the switching so the switch wouldn't have to carry the load.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

I am still a year or so out before laying down the wiring. I had a decent coupon that I needed to use up with CJPony that brought the cost down.
It is dangerous for me to go on long business trips with the internet and plans and ideas bouncing around in my head. Money always seems to be spent.

I use to work on the road some when the kids were little and no internet. I didn't have money to spend back then. I can see it being dangerous now sitting in a hotel room at night with nothing to do but look for parts on the internet. I would probably spend more than I could make. Maybe you can get your boss to include a FYI parts per diem.

I would strongly recommend a relay also....jj

Re: Trying out American Autowire

Ed I have a set of the AAW crimp tools, kept them too long during the rental period. Now their mine. Let me know if you need them.
The AAW kit is surprisingly(relatively) easy. I was amazed al all the little stuff that worked again.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

The 68 convertible up/down switch is up to the task without a relay, the earlier switches were different so they may be a candidate for a relay.
I don't like to add more parts than needed, more stuff to crap out.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

I bought this kit about four years ago, at that time the wiper wiring was also not included, but maybe it is now. In my kit, there was only a hot wire that went to the wiper switch, I had to reuse the wire harness from the switch to the motor.
I am only guessing, but maybe the wiring is not included because there are so many variations between the 65-66 one and two speed wipers.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

The AAW kit is nice but the wiper harness is still not supplied on the last car we did two month ago.  Nice big easy instructions.

Re: Trying out American Autowire

I used/purchase this set,, note they list different wipers in the main loom, page 9, I know you can call them and they make "exactlly"  what you need.
