Both of the Sonny and Cher Mustangs were a big flop IMO. I know it was the sixties but OMG those two were an a bore shun that George would never live down.

I remember being an 11 year old kid and buying AMT models of those two cars at the PX with my dad. I thought they were so cool! Amazing how times (and taste, thank God) change!

Well I like the George designs along with his other stuff. It was wild, custom and in your face. Of course I like the custom vans of that era, Monkee Mobile and all the other strange stuff!

Actually, those Mustangs are restrained and tasteful compared to the bulk of the custom cars being turned out during that era. Barris built The Monkey Mobile, The Munster Coach, and the first TV Batmobile. Let's not forget Big Daddy Roth's beyond bizarre cars: Beatnic Bandit, Orbitron, and scads of others. Add in the work of Darryl Starbird, the Alexander brothers, and Gene Winfield and the 60's were pretty wild. Plus there were the Pimpmobiles, in the big cities every third Caddy was purple with gold plated trim and leopard upholstery.
If you replace the Flintstones interiors in those Mustangs with something out of the CJPP catalog, I'll bet most members of this forum would like them.

I have a question on a few things in the engine compartment of these 2 cars.
The hose going between the heads and around in front of the distributor,
Also the canister with the wing nut and spout coming up off it right behind the alternator???
Is this part of the California smog crap??
Cant say I have seen either one before

Yes, That is the smog control. The canister is the air filter. The air pump is under the radiator hose. Air is then routed through the hoses to blow air in the exhaust ports.

I met George a couple of times, the last being at Classic Motorbooks Wings and Wheels event sometime last century, Motorbooks would bring in authors and people associated with the books they published and George was there for that reason. It was the year that the Mustang Monopoly game was released. I went in and bought one. I brought it out and showed it to George and said I don't think the Sonny and Cher cars are one of the properties in the game but would you please autograph the board for me? A classy guy, he did. I have yet to play it.

So THAT is where Ford got the idea for the front fenders on the new GT350. All this time I thought they stole that design from the Corvette.
But, I guess the Corvette technically got there first, by a few years.

I used to know the 2nd owner of these cars. Real nice guy that bought and sat on them for 30 years. Not my taste but pretty neat in person. I know he made good money when he sold them.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
