Getting car ready for the Bash.

I have to say the pressure of the Bash is the single most driving factor to get my car right. It is a beautiful thing. Crap I blew off after returning from Colorado last year wasn't touched and all of a sudden long trip is staring me in the face. Motivation. Plus I don't want to take the broken car trophy away from Coupedaddy. I think he won that last year.

New exhaust system installed, things are quieter, but now more noises we couldn't hear are heard. Driveline ( to me) seems loud.

Brakes have been my Achilles heel from the beginning. I installed the MS Brake system thinking it would solve my issues. Almost no change what so ever. After a complete rebuild of everything from the brake pedal to the calipers this was very disappointing. But I wasn't stopping. ( I didn't have brakes you see...... ) Working with my neighbor we started researching other possibilities . Probably cause was my vacuum at idle was only 15hg. I read some past posts on this and saw that 18 was minimum with it really needing to be 18-24 hg. My engine always idles really rough at stop lights when I am pushing on the brake. So reading some online solutions I buy a Hella Brake Booster pump and install it in the car with a 18-24hg vacuum switch and relay to build a system removed from the engine totally. Everything installed and it didn't work. What the what is going on. Further reading online and I was missing a critical inline vacuum check valve. Awesome I will just buy one. Nope not one available for delivery until after next week.
Plan B is to buy a Vacuum storage canister to help the engine and brakes store vacuum when engine produces more vacuum ( or is it less vacuum). Getting really close to Bash time so Sunday we head to the new Summit in Arlington and buy everything needed. Partially installed this tonight and will finish tomorrow after work.

Undercoated the wheel wells with Herculiner truck bed coating tonight. This is to prevent rock chips from happening like they did in Colorado.

Monte Carlo bar is partially installed. Will finish up tomorrow night.

AC leak found fixed and charged. Momma is very happy about that.

Emergency brake system installed but I am not sure this is really doing anything. As long as it stays off the exhaust and driveline I will work this later. Both ebrake levers were frozen on the rear calipers. Both brake cable lines were also frozen and had to be worked free.

Idle is better with possible vacuum leak fixed and getting the engine and the brakes to quit fighting over the vacuum.

Probably won't get to the battery leak issue that happens with battery left plugged in. I finally isolated that down to I have a constant 12 volts going to the alternator where it needs to be switched 12 volts. The alternator will always s have the sensing field circuit drawing .4 amps in this configuration which drains the battery. I need to run a switched 12 volts to a small circuit breaker panel to the front area so I can use it to run a relay and have more switched 12 volt options for future projects. Not sure of a good area to find switched 12 volts.

Need to do a oil change and full system checkout one more time then we are ready to go. Maybe a front end alignment since I think the Monte Carlo bar install is going to change camber slightly.

Pressure pushing down on me

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

Ed, I had the same issue after installing the 08 GT brakes and 'sploder rear discs.  But I also installed a lot more cam at the same time and only was getting 9.5" of vacuum.  Fitted a mechanical Ford 6.0 Diesel vac pump and now all is well.

Getting ready for the short drive to FWB (1600 miles one way).  Brakes, check;  oil change, check; new T-stat, check; new temp sender, check;  installed tach, check; new GPS mount, check; AC operating well, check; properly sized spare tire, check; 1500 mile shake-down run to Vegas, check; wheel balance and alignment touched up, check; MS Bash banner in the trunk, check; left over license plates for swap, check; motel reservations, check; AAA paid up, check....now, what have I forgotten?  Gotta be something.

See y'all in a week.

Sounds like everyone is making a mad dash to the starting line for the Bash.  Knock on wood; I think I'm ready.

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

I am really missing the BASH THRASH this year. The 66 is hopelessly dead so no point even messing with it. Hate to do it, but the 2017 will be the transportation to the bash. What the heck is the fun or challenge of driving a brand new car to the bash.  This is bash #14 and the 66 has made it to 12 up until this year.

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

I can't make it to the Bash, having used up all of my vacation for the year and then some, but I know the "bash thrash" feeling! Seems like every year I come back from a huge trip and there's a laundry list of little stuff that needs to be messed with. And then I leave it alone and don't mess with it until 2 weeks before I leave for the next big trip... and then I run around with my hair on fire trying to get everything done.

This year, it was rear brakes, rear axle bearings, springs, stuck thermostat, a gauge, debris in the gas tank, valve stem seals, and a rocker stud. Got everything done except for the stuck thermostat, and that made it as far as California with no problems LOL. Of course, when I was on the road I ended up having to replace the starter and the flywheel ring gear, which was interesting. And the throwout bearing and thermostat happened "while I'm at it". Just how it goes...

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

I know what you mean MS. It has taken me 2 years to get my car ready for this bash and I think it is ready. Wimberly was a good eye opener. Dropping the car off the jack was a real bummer, I just about gave up. I just got it back from the alignment shop tonight. So just a few more things to do to get it ready without much of a test run.

Glad to see I am not the only one with the Pressure of the trip forcing decisions that were put off for almost a year.

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

JUST got mine outta the shop today!   $400.00 bucks lighter butt........I think the release bearing arm/retaining spring/fulcrum  combo is FINALLY fixed.  I couldn't enjoy the ride home from the shop because I heard every strange click/squeak/strain/bump/roar/rattle a 50+ year old car an make.
Got a coupla days before I take off to fix/tune stuff.
We'll see

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

The coupe not scared, going back at it Fort Walton Beach or bust lol.  Bad news I haven't touch it in over a year. Good news is it has power brakes now which I needed last year on the Million Dollar Highway lol. I collected a lot of parts this year been  working my but off and had surgery three weeks ago. New 331 built not installed , EFI tank with in tank pump not installed  , Original Center  Console, Original Rally Pac 8k Tach Installed Mustang Steve Power Brake kit and Clutch Pedal Installed at the last Min new rotors and pads not installed. so my wife won the bet that I would be working on it the week before I leave so, she will be getting new floors now at least I get to walk on them. LMBO!!!!  If it takes another wrench award to be with my brothers and sisters at the Bash I will take it again!!!! Prayers for traveling grace for all see you soon the Coupe...

I was wondering if you made your Wednesday deadline.

That was a good bet on your part, you bought how many $$$$$ worth of parts for the car, and now Felicia gets some new floors.  Win or loose, you get parts for the car.

New floors are better than a new house with new floor!!

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

Million Dollar Highway?  No big deal, Coupe.  You shoulda been with Mr and Mrs MS, Mr and Mrs Tubo, Glen, Hakan and Emil, and Jean and I coming down from the top of Pike's Peak, on the way to Kalispell in '11.  They check the temp of your brakes at the bottom before they let you leave the park.  I ran the AOD in 1st. gear all the way down and the guy checked our brakes twice...couldn't believe how cool they were.

See ya soon,

BB

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

The old Emberglo girl is not going to make it this year.  Alternator changed didn't fix electrical problems. Hidden load somewhere?  Fault iso in work today and this weekend.  Sooo it looks like Honda will be the carrier this year.

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

Installed the Monte Carlo bar last night and noticed that the shock tower spacing was different. Figured an alignment needed to happen. Drove to NTB in Rockwall this morning because they had a good mechanic there. He had moved on, foreman told me flat out he didn't have anyone qualified to work on old cars. Sent me to Forney NTB because they had a good mechanic. He chickened out with some lame story about new machines wouldn't allow custom cars. I called BS on that and drove off. Car was driving a little squirrely on corners so I needed to get this done. Found a place in Rockwall that does custom car alignments. Special D Automotive has a new customer. Their attention to detail and willing to work with me was fantastic. Robert (Mechanic) let me sit right there with him and talk through everything. Then he took it out for a test drive and came back with two things he thought were wrong in the steering. Found two issues and fixed them on the spot. Several hours of time and they only charge me $95.

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

Very lucky, Ed.  At least the guys that knew they didn't know didn't just dive in and charge you a bunch of $$$ for crappy work.  I guess that says something.

We have a guy north of here that is an old Mustang guy and...he had his own alignment shop for years.  Now works for a Ford dealer but will still take the time to do the oldies.

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

Met a guy in Pryor Ok. that really "saved-my-bacon"!  I was LOST in the great state of Okla. and needed an emergency alignment. Just happened to be in Pryor and a tire place was having trouble with their machine and sent me to THIS place.(I forget the name)
This fella worked through his lunch break getting my front end straightened out from the crap PeP Boyz in Tulsa screwed in it!!
STILL the best alignment I have EVER had!!

Re: Getting car ready for the Bash.

Robert the Mechanic also discovered the source of my droning, whining coming from the car. I assumed it was from the drive shaft or rear end because of the speed related noise I was getting. He came back from the drive put it back on the lift and messed with the left front wheel. Turns to me and says your hub is dry or trashed. I have Fatman Fab front end which uses a 94 Mustang spindle with 94 hub. Sealed hub with zero adjustment or packing. I swapped it out this evening and took for a drive. No more noise. I was going to start changing expensive parts because to me it sounded like it was coming from the center/back of car. Being partially deaf doesn't help. He zeroed in on the noise and found the source with one five minute drive. I told the shop owner that he needs to hold onto him that he is priceless.
