that the starter drive wouldn't return. When I started my engine after installing the AC compressor I was getting this very loud noise from the engine and after a couple of minutes it was gone. So I disconnected the serpentine belt and started the engine. Still have the noise. I think its the starter gear not returning and after a few minutes it returns. It is a mini starter that I've had for 10 years with no issues.
Thanks for the help

Never experienced it myself, but I have heard of it. Basically the bendix goes bad. I would remove the starter and try bench testing it.

You COULD................climb out of the car.....roll underneath it with a BFH and give it a few whacks to make the bendix disengage every time it does it!?!
What's worng with that idea?!

You say it is a mini starter which usually has a solenoid to engage the gears. Most times when those have that problem after a few years, it is usually the spring dies or the thing just gets iked up and won't return correctly. A new one is a good plan!

Yeah, I stopped using those mini starters years ago. I'd just get a Fox Mustang starter for a '92 5.0 application. Much lighter, but OEM quality.

Thanks Guys,
I switched to a mini starter because of Unisteer Rack. Needed a little more room in the starter area.
