Today is a good day in the world of classic Mustangs.

I am trading the 65 corvette today for something more appropriate for a guy with a first name of Mustang.  Will update once the deal is finalized.

Going to park it until my new shop is finished and the 56 F100 is finished.  The car runs and drives fine but has the typical Previous Owner Syndrome of inop windshield wipers and bad turn signal switch.  Also has a TAIWAN replacement brake booster installed.  THAT has to go!  Just what I want to do is dive into another dash re-do, but that is likely a year away.  If my health holds out that long, I can see a 100% restoration on the car happening.  Will just have to wait and see.

It has a 428 with an AOD behind it, using some aftermarket adapter plate.  Other than those things is pretty much original stuff.  It even had a tilt wheel.  I have a lot to learn about FE engines, because I pretty much know nothing about them.  Don't even know enough to tell exactly what engine is in it.  I am told not original, but it is an R code GT500KR.

Re: Today is a good day in the world of classic Mustangs.

FE stands for freakin expensive!!  Welcome to the club!!

Somewhere on the skirt of the block will be a part number like C6ME-A, which shows up on a 390 or 428 block. Under the oil filter pad will be the date code. There should be an A or C scratch on the back of the block hidden by the flex plate. Use a scope into the cylinder to look for a number on the piston. Pull a plug and use a dowel to determine the stroke, it should be 3.98.
Not sure if the heads will be the 16 bolt C80E-6090’s or a 14 bolt C8AE-H. That information will be between the center plugs. Good luck seeing it. The 14 bolt heads will have the top row outside exhaust manifold bolts lower than the centers. The bottom row centers will not be drilled. The date code is under the valve cover in the center.

Re: Today is a good day in the world of classic Mustangs.

Yeah, FEs are tough to peg because they used the same casting number for parts across the line of engines.  The big difference in the 428 was the crank, as it was only used in the 428 and 410 engines.  Also, don't panic if you see 352 cast into it in a couple places.  ALL FEs have this; it means nothing.

Re: Today is a good day in the world of classic Mustangs.

Do not know squat about FE motors, but I believe the 428 was externally balanced, whereas the 390 (and most all othrr FE motors) was internally balanced.  So much external stuff is interchangable within the FE family that it is difficult to pinpoint what you have aside from bore/ stroke and balance.
Better,
Al

Re: Today is a good day in the world of classic Mustangs.

Al brings up a good point. On a 428/410, Ford had a huge metal weight, 50 OZ I think, attached to the flex plate for balance. No of the others did.
