I got my block back today and discovered a tag on it that I don't know what it means. #J22769 it is located in the DS of the block at the rear.

Update on the little 289,
the pistons are in, ft cover and chain set are on, water pump too. Block painted. bottom will get closed up Monday and heads installed, then some more paint. Shooting for install on Tues, Weds if I dont get side tracked again.

I'd wait to put the oil pan on until the heads are on. That way, God forbid, you drop something down the distributor hole, etc. you don't have to pull the pan to retrieve it. The oil pan is usually one of the last things I put on an engine.

Now that it's too late......I always reverse the pistons on my SBF builds( have 'the notch' pace the rear and NOT the front) Picks up a few "free HP"! Since the pin hole is offset on the pistons(makes the engine quieter when cold and warming up) By rotating them on the perspective rods it give the piston a better angle on the crankshaft throws. No measurable increase in side loading of the cylinder.....just free power. (some claims of 7% sooooo......YRMV?)
I don't use any gaskets on my oil pan or front cover either. Just clean well with acetone/lacquer thinner/ or Brakleen(I love this stuff!) before squirting on a nice bead. I mean..........how often you plan on taking them off? Absolutely NO LEAKS either.

I have been thinking about not using my gasket too. Although I liked the eases of the felpro one piece I didn't get it in my set this time. My F150 six banger has no gasket, and doesnt leak only makes since. As far as the pistons go I thought you had to put the notch to the front?
I have hyper pistons. The only thing I was doing was incressing the top ring gap to .016 as pr hyper instructions.
Not srue if i know what I am doing now with this sbf. But i know the cam is right this time.

I think 'instructions' call for having the notch facing forward.......my mod was have the pistons installed on the rods so the notch would be facing the rear. I guess you could take the piston/rod combo from the left bank and flip them and install on the right bank..
I might be confused (that sometimes happens!) You just need to be aware of the sides of the rods and make sure they are NOT backward on the crank pin!
I just had the pistons mounted 180* on the rods from the machine shop (the folks who told me about the 'trick'.

That would only work if you had 4 fly-cuts for valve relief. What about us domed guys?

You always have to check that the rod and piston are oriented properly, whether you opt to spin the pistons 180 degrees or not. The rod may still have a right and wrong orientation on the crank.
With domed pistons (why is anyone still running domes?) you would have to buy a piston with the offset made into them opposite standard. I'd be interested to see if even off the shelf pistons weren't already taking advantage of this. Its not like its a big secret at this point.
