Oil Filters

I was going to change the oil in my Mustang and Had a couple of filters to choose one.  The quaker state filter is much smaller but has the same size mounting system as the Fram.  Quaker State says it fits 69 mustang with 302.  Just wondering if any of you have used them.

Re: Oil Filters

No, but filter size isn't necessarily a measurement of how well they filter.  That's determined by surface area of filter media inside the filter.  Fram is kind of notorious for having relatively few pleats and not a ton of surface area.  Years ago I cut a bunch of filters apart and was really disappointed with the Fram.  The NAPA Gold filters I now use on almost everything had about 2.5 times the filtering area as the Fram.  I believe they are built by WIX, which are also great filters.  Amsoil also makes filters that are great, though tough to find locally and a bit pricey.  I'm pretty particular on my filters.  That said, I ran Fram PH8A and PH5A filters on SBFs and SBCs respectively for decades and never had a single issue.  I'm probably making a mountain of a molehill as I sometimes do...

I wouldn't reject the QS filter just because its smaller though.

Re: Oil Filters

It is interesting that it's smaller, only problem is your oil filter wrench (when taking it off ) might not fit. I've always been partial to Wix and Motorcraft (what I currently use). But I am sure the QS is fine to use.

Re: Oil Filters

I'm with TKO, I use NAPA Gold too. I would also use a Motorcraft if I couldn't get to a NAPA.

Re: Oil Filters

Walmart sells the Motorcraft FL-1A for $3.97. Why even think about using anything else?

Through out the years with Mowers, ATV, Trucks and cars I think I have about 5 different oil filter wrenchs.  I was changing the oil for the first time in my Sonata and guess what?   I didn't have that size...LOL  Had to use a universal filter wrench to get it it off.

I just pound a screw driver thru the can and crank it off. What can it hurt

Re: Oil Filters

Quit snooping in my cabinet. The dual filter was for my 69, but the line ports in the casting wouldn't seal and would drip oil.

You actually think I can remember where I bought them? When I ran out of the Wix filters RV6 gave me, I bought one at the parts store. When I returned home and opened the cabinet, I saw these 4 filters. Go figure.

Re: Oil Filters

I tend to use filter pliers rather than the wrench.  The fit most everything, and damaging a filter I'm already replacing is a non issue for me.  In a pinch I've used my belt.  Works about as well as a strap wrench if you ever get stuck.

It's funny I've been buying both my oil and filters from Walmart online, they ship fast and have the best prices for what I use.
