MY CAR WAS ORIGINALLY A FACTORY POWER STEERING CAR. I REMOVED ALL OF IT BUT THE STEERING HEAD THEY ARE 16:1 LIKE THE MANUAL 16:1 THAT ARE ON THE SHELBY....BUT MINE REQUIRES ABOUT 2 MORE TURNS OF THE STEERING WHEEL OVER THE SHELBY HEAD,
MINE SEEMS THO HAVE A LITTLE PLAY IN IT...IS THERE ANYBODY ON HERE THAT HAS REBUILT ONE OR DO YALL JUST GET NEW ONE...OR IS THERE A REBUILDNG SERVICE YOU GET ONE FROM AND SEND YOURS AS A CORE....I THINK I WOULD WANT TO UPGRADE TO THE QUICK STEER IT WOULD PROBALY BE BETTER IN THE PARKING LOTS. I GUESS IF IT WAS GONNA BE TO MUCH I MAY AS WELL GO TO THE BORGESON POWER STEERING MUSTANGSTEVE SUGGESTED BEFORE ITS AROUND $1,000.

Chokostang in Murrayville ILL. 217 882 2083
Call him, he is the gold standard in o/e Ford steering. He can get you what you want, prolly a 19-1 box
He rebuilt my steering box and came back like new.

Chockostang to get yours rebuilt.
He may have rebuilt boxes available too.
Talk to Bearing Bob about his 19:1 box first.
I removed mine while rebuilding/modifying front end.
I went through it and removed as much of the old grease and repacked with new.
Word of caution, don’t loose any of your bearings in lower section.
They are not caged.
This car had power steering from factory as well.
I made a slight adjustment on box and it reduced the lock to lock turns as well.
This adjustment should be done without anything connected on output shaft.
The Haynes manual had the procedure in it...a bit confusing at first.
Actually made more sense after disassembly.
BTW, throughly clean exterior of box before opening it up.
I used a brass wire brush and degreaser.
I’m glad I did.

Billy, did you get in touch with Dan Chock yet, guaranteed he can get you what you’re need.
His wife Carol will probably answer the phone but is very knowledgeable about the business.
When I switched over to EPAS he got me the 16-1 box I needed.

I used a 19:1 Chocko rebuilt manual box in my 69 for less than 1,000 miles. While they're nice in parking lots, I don't recommend using one if most of your driving is not in parking lots (car parks for our British folks). I'll make someone a smoking deal on it if they need it.

Bob C recommended I....'just add some grease to my steering box". It had too much free-play while driving down the road.
I did and it TOTALLY CURED the issue! It was like a brand new steering Mustang!
I pumped in almost a whole tube of grease!!!
From the age of the unit...plus the heat from the DS header...I guess, over time, it just cooked the factory grease out of it.
Take the bolt out of the top and give it a few squirts first. (I also 'gently' tweaked the adjustment nut just a little and that tightened it up....just enough...I still have good wheel return to Neutral when turning)

The REAL GT350 Shelby used the same box but had longer pitman and idler arms which further reduced lock-lock steering travel. Opentracker sells the kit.
SHELBY QUICK STEER KIT
PREPARE for a lot of exertion to corner and park the car. You ain’t getting any younger, BILLY!
Ditto on chockostang box rebuilds. He gets good ratings.
Or just but a Borgeson p/s box and be done with it.

Grease would certainly help. I tore down 3 Mustang boxes in the last two years and none of them had anything resembling grease in them. They all had a small amount of hard black chunks that at some time was probably grease. The best looking one from the exterior had mucho rust damage to the sector shaft and worm gear which made then useless. I won't use a fifty year old steering box that hasn't been rebuilt.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
