Re: broke in the cam today

Checked the push rods today on a 1/4" thick mirror. 1/3 of them are bent to some degree. Tuesday we will see what the shop say as I was building a new motor with new parts not bent, metal ground in used stuff. And thanks Sal for the talk last night, made me feel more like I knew what I was doing on this build.

Re: broke in the cam today

OK today went well
I feel we walked into the shop this morning and the owner and shop Forman were standing there so we said hi. Then I handed a nice letter to the owner saying this is for you and set the cam down on the counter. The Forman looked at the cam and the owner read the letter then said you didn't have to write the letter. I said yes I did, it let me express my feelings. They told me that they will be making this right. I asked where my heads were and they said behind you but you cant have them. We need your block to install the cam bearings and we want all the rest of the parts as we are going to put this together for you making sure it is all correct. They did agree there was defiantly coil bind. I said ok but what about the time frame and they said as soon as they have the cam it will de done. And he said they have 2 cam shops. Delta and Red Line.  My letter stated that my top end was all trash and that I wanted it replace because I was not building a motor with used parts.
I feel good.

Re: broke in the cam today

Sounds good.  In  these situations you have to look at things from their point of view too.  They had no control over how it was assembled.  It sounds like they are a good shop that will make it right, and that in the end is what really matters.  Everyone makes mistakes, but how you recover from those mistakes separates bad and good businesses.

Re: broke in the cam today

I had my 1993 Dodge diesel serviced at the local quick lube (they do car repairs also). I drove about 3 miles from the place and the truck started vibrating bad, pulled over and called the lube shop. The owner who I have know for three years came to check the truck. He wanted to make sure they didn't forget to put oil in the rearend. It was full so he had it towed back to the shop. He called later and said upon in inspection the rear end had a problem. It was Friday afternoon so he said call him Monday. I called on Monday he said come pick up the truck. This truck had 126,000 miles on it with a lot of heavy towing. The rear end had seized up and he came in on Sunday and rebuilt it himself. When I asked about paying he said there is no charge. Now knowing how hard I used the truck I said Sam the truck is almost thirty years old and worked hard changing the oil didn't cause it to break down. At least let me pay for the parts. He said absolutely not it broke leaving my shop my responsibility. Needless to say any work my vehicles need that I can't do goes to his place.

Sure...My AFR heads use shouldered studs that are 7/16 - 14 below the shoulder and 3/8 - 24 at the top.  As your chart shows, 24 threads/inch works out to .042 (actually .0417) per thread.  One half revolution = .021.  7/16 - 20 studs at the top will be .050 per thread and .025 for the half turn..  I was assuming 3/8" studs in that answer since the pic on Post #56 appears to be 7/16 down and 3/8 -24 up.
I didn't use a chart, just divided 1000 by the thread count.

Thread count at the rocker stud does not take into account the 1.6:1 ratio of the rocker arm. If you tighten the nut down 0.021”, would that not move the pushrod downward (0.021/1.6) and move the rocker at the valve stem down by (0.021” x 1.6)?
Or something like that...

What does "I was not aware you need to have a cut in the top for the stud to fit in." mean?

You must mill the top of the boss down so the hex on the stud does not interfere with the rocker arm’s travel.  This MUST BE CHECKED.
If you do not mill the boss down in an amount equal to the thickness of the hex on the stud, the hex will be up high enough where it MIGHT interfere with the rocker arm.

Also sounds like a radius wasn’t cut on inside of threaded boss for the stud.

This SOUNDS like a good shop that will stand behind their work.
Although they may NOT make any money on this particular job......their reputation will remain good and will probably increase their business once 'word-gets-around' they are stand-up guys that stand behind their work!!
Let us know how it plays out in the end!!

Wow.  Service like that is really, really rare.  These days or any other time.  BUT, its also smart.  I remember my grandfather telling me a story from when he was a kid.  My grandfather was a very successful guy, and had been ambitious and a businessman almost since birth.  As a kid he worked at the Wilmington Dry Goods selling the various trains that were popular in the day.  The store was run by Mr. Lazarus, a very successful guy from whom my grandfather learned a lot.  One day a woman came in the store and wanted to return a dress.  The saleslady told her that they didn't sell it and she couldn't have purchased it there.  The woman insisted.  Mr. Lazarus overheard and asked how much she had paid for it.  She said $5, so he went into his own wallet and gave her $5 and took the dress. An hour later she came back, red faced and asked to speak to Mr. Lazarus.  She apologized and asked for the dress back while holding out his $5, saying she had made a mistake and didn't buy it there.  He handed her the dress, but refused the money.  She insisted, but he simply said "I have given that to you, and only ask that you spend it in my store".  My grandfather asked why he had given her the money when she had no claim to it; he said Mr. Lazarus had wasted $5.  Mr. Lazarus said "Freddy, Freddy, Freddy, I didn't waste $5.  I spent $5 to buy a customer for life."  That made a big impression on my grandfather, and on me by proxy.  Its one of the reasons why I've always believed and run my own business with the mindset that if you take care of your customers you don't waste a lot of time or money finding new ones.

Re: broke in the cam today

Thanks guys. It was infact the flare on the bottom of the studs that caused the crack and my stupidness for thinking they would just screw in.
