Hi guys, I’m still slowly rebuilding my project. not a lot of original sheet metal left on it but I’m getting close to the end of the nightmare
I have a weird thing going on with the suspension
the shackles have damaged the frame rails… I’m going to patch and replace everything but I’m wondering how this happened and if this is really normal. What d’you guys think?

That sucker was bottoming out a lot, and the bumpstops weren't catching it before the spring eye hit the frame.

It looks to me like the shackles are too short (distance between the bolts) or the rubber bushings are completely shot, not keeping the shackle bolts centered in their holes.

Your bushings are so far worn out that the spring moves to where it is not supposed to move. Luckily, new shackles are about the cheapest thing you will ever have to buy for your car. DO NOT buy polyurethane shackle bushings. They make more noise than you can imagine.

Speaking from first hand experience, I had them and took them out due to the incessant squeaking. If you want something harder that will improve handing get a set of Del-A-Lum bushings, but they are not cheap. I've always wanted the Del-A-Lums, but still have rubber in mine after many years of thinking about it.

I agree sure looks like the bushings are wallered out.
Years ago my came home from work and said I better take a look see at her Plymouth Scamp. She said it was raining real low at the back rear.
Sure nuff, the car was bottomed out, when I popped the trunk the rear shackle and spring were about four inches through the trunk floor.
Shackle and bushings one, frame rail and floor pan zero.

I wish I'd never seen that before, but...
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
