Re: Resetting the rear leaf springs

I have 1" shorter (than original) springs, so maybe doing the drop will create issues. I'm not sure if I want to open up Pandora's box here, so I may think about it for a while...

Re: Resetting the rear leaf springs

The drop is going to lower the front ride height about 5/8-3/4"  You drop the upper A-arm mounting point 1", but the spring sits on the A-arm not on its mounting point, so what you're really doing is altering the angle at which the upper A-arm sits.  I had to go from a 45 series to a 40 series tire when I did mine to regain my clearance, but my tires were right on the limit of fitting (I had modified the front lower fender/valance area to get them to clear before the drop).

As for the lowering springs, I'd ditch those.  Go to a standard spring with the drop and a 3/8" insulator on top and it should sit exactly where it is now, so if the tires clear now they 99% should clear when done.

Re: Resetting the rear leaf springs

I think at this stage, I might just stick with raising up the rear by an inch and put off the Shelby drop for another time. I just don't want to mess with something that isn't broken.

Oh but when you finally do the Arning drop you'll realize it was broken.

I'm certain I will... But, I was the total dummy that rebuilt the entire front end and never did the Shelby drop, so I need to live with that mistake until I am fixing something under there again.
As it stands, I could potentially do the drop and then need to roll the fender arches and then get another set of lower profile tires and... So I think I will hold tight for now.

I did that too, but at the time there weren't templates available and I lacked the skill to make my own.  I actually rebuilt the front end while the car was apart in the body shop (easier with no fenders in the way).  The shop owner was a friend of a neighbor, and needless to say he was actually pretty impressed that a 17 year old kid did that in a day.

Years later I finally did the drop using template I made and WOW!  Night and day difference.  Well, well worth it.

Re: Resetting the rear leaf springs

I booked my car in to have the leaf springs reset. The guy must be good, because there is a month long waiting list. I will report back in a month hopefully.

Re: Resetting the rear leaf springs

I think it's going to cost around the $400 mark with the suspension shop doing the removal, resetting of the springs and refitting.
If I dropped just the springs off, I think it was around $200 just to reset the springs.

Re: Resetting the rear leaf springs

Thats cheaper than buying new springs and having them installed.
