I get  5" from the straight edge to the top of the T-stat housing.  I can't download an image as my computer and cell phone do no want to talk today.

Yeah Sal, we in the North are tough un’s.
We grew up chewing on grade 8 bolts as soothers, spitting up rust and pulling  parts in the dead of winter with three feet of snow on the ground.

Performer RPM is too tall for mine when it was carbed.  Had to use straight Performer manifold.  Now I have FiTech and I had to get a shorter air cleaner still on Performer.

Re: 351w in 65/66 stock hood

Yep!!.........I have an RPM 'knock-off' and with the short air filter, the  underside of my hood has the paint scuffed ever-so-slightly from the air cleaner top. (did'nt measure close enough when installing and the hold down stud in the carb 'dimpled' the bottom of the hood!)
This is with the 5.0 engine!!!!!

Re: 351w in 65/66 stock hood

This Picture is my 351W in my 65.  I have the Edelbrock "Performer RPM" manifold, 1/2" spacer and a Holley carb.  The air cleaner base is the 14" Ford used for the Hi-Po Mustangs, the air filter is a K&N 'E-2859' (1.5" high), the top is a Summit 'SUM-239501'.  The hood clearance is minimal, and the air cleaner would just touch the hood when the engine torqued over.  I've since changed the hood with a functional Shelby scoop and an oval air cleaner.
Years ago we put a 351W in a 65 Mustang with the stock Ford cast iron 4-BBL manifold; the stock 2-BBL air cleaner fit with no issues.

Re: 351w in 65/66 stock hood

I'm not familiar with how a 351 looks from the bottom side of the car, but is there a room to lower the motor over the cross member and steering linkage?

What other headaches would that create??

Re: 351w in 65/66 stock hood

Kinda like Daze’s EFI intake.
There might be other options besides Mustang intake.
Fabricating will still be required.
Would need some known dimensions with a stock style front end.
Prefer to think this one out in advance instead of part way through the project and have to cut a hole in the hood.
This would be naturally aspirated too.

You can't lower the engine much as the cross brace under the engine is close, same as with the 289 engine.

I was wondering about that. My 390 sits way down in there. The oil pan has recesses on each side to clear the steering linkage for hard turns.

Ha! I dunno, going through a dusty junkyard when it's 105 out and everything you touch wants to give you a 3rd degree burn can be just as brutal!

Re: 351w in 65/66 stock hood

I have a 65 with a 289, performer intake, eldie carb, I added a 1" riser to my stock air cleaner and I still have about 3/4" to the hood. if you need more I can pull a tape out.

Slammed Big Blue, ran over the varmints that messed with the Stang. Now all is good in the NW

  WOW!
No way could I put a 1" spacer under mine!

I had 289 Performer intake, 3/8” heat isolator, 1406 carb, and 14”x3” air cleaner.  Used a base from an old Moroso air cleaner.  The carb flange almost even with bottom of filter base...just cleared large cap Duraspark distributor cap.  I repositioned #1 from 12 o’clock to about 10:30 position as well.

I tried Edelbrock’s crappy plastic air cleaner horn riser, didn’t work well with their own Edelbrock air cleaner base.
The base didn’t have a flat lip to rest on the plastic, so the filter would get cock-eyed on the spacer.  Not so great for filtering the San Jauquin dust.

I preferred the larger air cleaner housing instead of a the smaller ones, more common filter replacements and usually much cheaper too.

This also cleared the stock 65 carb linkage.

Yes, I am happy with the R&C MII front end.  In the years past on several Fords, I had burned fingers, busted knuckles, and generally fought with those shock towers and was very happy to be rid of them.  The only issue I have with the this front end is that there is only about 3.5" of coil-over travel.  With the potholes and just poorly maintained roads here, you have to be aware of every divot to preclude bottoming out.
I am also quite pleased with the hydroboost system, although it is a very tight fit, I had to modify some tools in order to tighten several bolts.
