Re: 1993 302 HO automatic trans starter ?

Does it hang up just as it is starting or does it stay hung up. Mine does it for a few seconds and then disengages. It did it with my old starter too.

Its really me....I fixed my caps lock .

Re: 1993 302 HO automatic trans starter ?

The starter housing needs to positively engage in the big hole in the block plate. Adding washers would make that impossible.  Be sure your starter and flywheel are compatible. I know with swapped parts that is sometimes difficult...

Re: 1993 302 HO automatic trans starter ?

All 5.0s had an OEM gear reduction starter beginning in '92.  Its a cheap, reliable unit.  That's what I would use.

Are you sure the starter isn't just installed too deep?  I had to shim mine outward to solve an issue like you describe.  There are Ford starter shims that can be purchased which allow this.  I made my own and used two shims to move it out enough to stop the issue.  The nose cone was still able to register properly, even with the spacers.

Re: 1993 302 HO automatic trans starter ?

For years.....starters were transmission specific meaning A/T required and A/T type FoMoCo starter. Make sure the 'parts-counter-monkey' gave you the right one! (I wanna think later model starters were either/or.
Might wanna check that.
Also.......does your starter have its on solenoid?  If so.....I tink it require its on power supply from the battery (not just 'branched off' the power lead to the starter....although I did it that way on mine with no issues) Might be worth checking while you troubleshoot.

Re: 1993 302 HO automatic trans starter ?

Duh: you guys are right although for years i never had trouble installing a replacement starter , now it has happened . After research it dawned on me that the starter is in to deep . Dorman has spacers i  am getting a couple today  an will experiment with it . I saw the spacer looking at the MSD pdf about installation .  My ride is a replica 32 5 window and a lot o mixed parts .So far it wasn't a problem . Thank you for patience and help.   85 years old and still loving the car game .

Re: 1993 302 HO automatic trans starter ?

WELL : Put one shim in, just like it never happen. Starts every time . I used a NAPA part , would suggest just the Dorman one the Napa part not quite drilled mounting holes but it did go in.  First time or every thing. If you don't learn something new each day your on the way out . Texas is a long ways from the bay area ,besides our governor won't let us travel .  thanks again  there is no such thing as an electric hot rod . No oil no plastic .

Re: 1993 302 HO automatic trans starter ?

Gave up on the cheapo mini starters . Bought a Power master . FOLLOW the instructions for the depth from the face of the ring gear ,must be 3/4 inch which leaves 1/16 clearance . works great .  Customer service very good and made in USA .   Quality parts are not cheap but no ore problems .

Rock Auto has Motorcraft reman for $98.  '92 Mustang with 5.0.  That is a factory gear reduction (lightweight/mini) starter.
