I am sorry to have to tell of the passing of Al Newman, one of our long time forum members. Al’s real name was Larry Hackney. He is survived by his wife, Deborah, who is also a long time Mustang fan.
Larry used to own Southwest Mustang in Arlington, Tx for many years. About thevtime he retired from that venture, he joined us on FYIFORD as Al Newman. He said he chose the name because he was an ALL NEW MAN once he retired. He still worked on Mustangs until about a year before he passed. He was a great man, passionate about the Falcons and Mustangs as well as their owners. He will be missed.
Some of you may remember him as the Bash Cook with the Al Newman WHAT, ME WORRY? apron at the bash held at Joe Pool Lake in Cedar Hill, Tx a few years ago. He was very knowledgeable about Falcons and Mustangs and what made them work.
I don’t have many details. I know he had cancer the last few years. He was a private guy and did not seek out attention. Best I can determine, there will be no funeral or service of any kind.
RIP Al Newman

So very sorry to hear this, Steve. I had the pleasure of meeting him a bit at our first Bash...Waxahachie. I know he was a friend of your's and I know he will be missed. Again, so sorry.

Such sad news. Like BB stated, I met Larry at the same Bash. Most recently, I purchased an 8" third member that was posted on the swap meet page. Larry sent me a PM and had me ship it to him first so he could check it and set it up for me. I'm grateful for his efforts and that thing is super quiet.
Thoughts and prayers are with Deb and the family....

Seemed like a nice level headed guy. A shame last year's bash got canceled, as I never had the opportunity to met him in person. Prayers for his family.

I didn’t get to meet Leon Hackney in person, but we did have some conversations.
He shared with me how “Al Newman” started out of respect for Steve Wilkes.
He also shared the story behind the convertible that introduced him to his wife.
He had a great sense of humor too...
“I personally would not slow down if I saw a Holley setup lying in the road.”

I do remember that he flipped a great burger at the Joe Pool Lake Bash. Nice guy and a real Mustang resource to the FYIFORD board over the years. RIP Larry/Al.

Truly bad to hear. We are both bad when it comes to names and even more so if it's an aka, but a face is hard to forget. So we are sure we sat and talked some.

Very sorry to hear about Larry passing. Prayers out to his family he left behind. We had some great threads and conversations in the glory days of the forum. He was so knowledgeable about Mustangs and Falcons. The world is a sadder place now. Hug your loved ones gentlemen. Only God knows the number of breaths you get to draw.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
