hi po manifolds

looking for someone who can answer the burning question I have going on with my 64 falcon. wanting to go to the hi po exhaust manifolds but they say they won't fit, what is the point of contact? in my search I found, ( so far) that summit had a customer that said they had to remove about 1/8" of material from the steering box. which now becomes a question of how much material is on the steering box, and is that the only point of contact? really hoping someone on this forum has traveled down this rabbit hole.

Re: hi po manifolds

My cateloges say that the hipo manifold will fit your falcon.  Do you have the manifolds yet?  Mustangs and flacons share much of their running gear, so you should not have much problem.

I am always curious about the "they" that is bandied around.   Who are yours?  Do you have more specifics?

Re: hi po manifolds

when I look at the fitment  section of the add it says they won't fit. I am not convinced that it is not doable, I want to know what it takes to get them in. how much interference there is from steering box. I have already bought two sets of shorty headers, one said all you need I five inches at the back, well I've got that, BUT MEASURED FROM WHERE? the other set in the description said yes they'd fit but hits the shock tower on the passenger side.
the long tube header that are on the car now are dented from interferance with the steering in a few places. they were on the car when i bought it and i have no idea who built them.

Re: hi po manifolds

john ha; thanks for the information now, I have other questions, the equalizer, is that for the emergency brake? and why a custom H pipe? lastly this whole, fun party I've been having is due to the removal of the t 10 and the install of the t5 with the MS cable clutch system

Re: hi po manifolds

1/8" could be taken care of with a couple washers!
If it's close.............BF Hammer time!
The issue with the 4 tube headers.......happened to me EGG-ZACKLY! (I wish a dozen times I had repaired/replaced the burned out tube.)  Seems the long tubes were installed back when stuff was made TO FIT!...not... just get it close/compromise.

Re: hi po manifolds

how I understand your statement of "just get it close" I would like to amend your statement, if it would have been close I would have worked with it, as in "massaged it with a hammer".

I can't be sure about the equalizer or the H-pipe.  I know that others have called NPD to ask about things like this and they've usually gotten good answers so I'd suggest giving that a try.

Re: hi po manifolds

so I called NPD today, I tell them what I am working on and the guy on the other end of the phone says, "we don't have any parts for falcon's"! so I tell him that according to your catalog you do. then he says do you have the part numbers? no I do not but I am interested in the hi po exhaust manifolds.
what happened to them looking that up? I even mentioned to him that the only ones they have in stock were the ones that had the printing printed up side down on one of the exhaust manifolds. pretty sorry service when a customer can tell you what is in your inventory, and you make a choice not to even look it up.

Re: hi po manifolds

If you read NPDs description for their hipo mannys, it gives their part number for the equalizer bar. The equalizer bar they reference is for 4 sp applications....its also known as a Z- bar. Search their site for part# 7825-OA (equalizer bar) for additional info.

As for the hipo mannys. I bought a set from BB's friend who tried to install in his falcon. He did some grinding, how much, I don't know but, due to the falcons smaller engine compartment, they wouldn't work to his satisfaction.

Re: hi po manifolds

I have heard the Zbar being called an equalizer bar but have totally forgotten about it. thanks for the heads up about the hi po manifolds not working to your friends satisfaction. at this point I am not very happy with the situation I'm in with my falcon. what should have been an easy swap has turned into  a big PITA. weighing options about ditching the cable clutch and going hyd. cost are about the same as the exhaust manifolds.

Re: hi po manifolds

What's the problem with the cable clutch?  I thought we had that whupped.

Re: hi po manifolds

your part works perfectly. the very most clearance I can get between the cable and the header is about 1/2" to 3/4" I have it wrapped with header wrap and I scared it's not enough. I have bought two sets of headers neather one fits the car. shock tower clearance issues.
currently debating pulling it all apart, (the headers) and making the one set fit with the help of a rose bud and what ever else it takes. considered the hi po manifolds but that isn't just a bolt in operation, grinding on stearing box and maybe the manifold it self.  I am busy and I don't like rushing into things I want to think this one thru  before I pull the trigger.

Re: hi po manifolds

So main issue is headers and shock tower clearance?
Trying to verify my understanding of problem.

Re: hi po manifolds

You know Val............"back-in-the-day"......I had a 64 Sprint. 260/4speed.
Mid-60's was when I ordered long tube headers from Honest Charley...of all places. (this was before Summit and those other places).
Trans Dapt, I think. Cheapest ones I could find from H/C. (hey I was 18 years old with a summer job! )
Anywho......me and another late teenager installed them WITHOUT help from a BFH!
Pass. side required just a 'nip' with a  gas hatchet (shock tower) to install.
Soooooooooo....somebody today makes headers that will fit!
I doubt Trans Dapt is still in business..... but my point is......it wasn't that hard -back then- to mak'em so.....Shirley somebody still can make a decent set that will fit!!
Hope you find some.......Hard to beat the sweeet sounds long tubes make....even capped up!

Re: hi po manifolds

Here's what I would do.

Order the hipo mannys or whatever headers you want, from Summit.

Test fit each one, decide which one fits the bill. Send back any or all that don't fit right.

Summits return policy is great... Just pay attention to how many days from purchase you have for returns for full refund.

Could that be a pain in the rear? Sure, but may be the least expensive option for you at this point.

Re: hi po manifolds

Hey Val, Rick Schmidt is the owner of NPD and will go the extra mile for customer service. He doesn't always know when his employees fall short. Here's his email address: rschmidt@npdlink.com

I'd let him know you're not getting properly taken care of.

Re: hi po manifolds

I’m with Josh. Find the best return policy and order a set. Provide plenty of protection for them as you do a test fit so they are returnable if necessary.

I had to do the same thing with my borders and power steering box. I could not find any hard evidence that it would fit with a big block and headers. I did a mock up in the driveway with an bare block, one head, the header and the gearbox covered in blue painters tape to make sure.

I made a heat shield for my headers similar to the ones on my Harley. It mounts to the header with hose claps and creates an air gap of about 1/8”. It’s been on there for years with the MS cable clutch and long tubes.
