In your opinion...who was the racer/builder that was "wayyyy ahead of their time" as for as innovation/smarts/tricks/etc.?!
My pick would be Mickey Thompson! Inventor/builder/driver(Bonneville & drags & NASCAR...when NASCAR was real and not fake!) & Indy/businessman. This guy made stuff people are still using!
Post your entry......

Smoky, hands down the most innovative.

I'm thinking Don Garlits, but for obvious reasons I have to mention Peter Svensson that set a world record in top fuel drag bike 24th of August 2012 with an ET of 5.709 at a dragstrip not far from where I live here in Sweden. IIRC it took Larry "Spiderman" McBride five years to run faster.

There are many, but Smokey gets my vote.

I go with Smokey. I grew up reading his Smokey’s Garage articles in Popular Mechanics magazine. Those are probably the precursor to how FYIFORD FORUM came about, many years later. I was fascinated by his problem solving abilities, and that stuff probably formed my mechanical thinking and aptitude more than any other inputs. Without Smokey, I might have grown up to be a musician or something. (Not a jab at musicians, just a true statement)

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
