I was thinking to sell a 69 coupe and an interested party went to open the hood before I could stop him. The car has been sitting for about 10 years. Hinges are very stiff and he raised it part way and when he went to put it down, the left side, just forward of the hinge, bent about 25 degrees. I will remove hinges and clean and lube. The hood is now straight but left side can be bent easily. How can I reinforce??

There was a fix marketed for Chevy trucks years ago due to a similar problem. Basically it was two pieces of heavy gauge angle that were secured over the ribs on the sides of the underside of the hood. Not exactly pretty, but it seemed to work.

The fix is to keep your hinges lubed. My brother's 65 had some really stiff hinges, so bad I thought I'd bend the hood. A quick application of 50/50 acetone and atf made the hood open like it had bearings instead of pin hinges.

Did the same thing to mine a few years back. I bought a different hinge system that uses less pressure to close the hood.

Note to self: Go lube the hinges on the 69 coupe. 📌
