Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

I have Grundy.  When I first looked into getting insurance I'd had a professional appraiser do an appraisal on my Mustang to get a baseline value for the agreed value insurance.

I felt that both Hagerty and Grundy were reputable companies so decided to ask both companies for quotes on an agreed value policy amount matching the appraised value.

Hagerty declined to offer a quote.

Grundy provided a reasonable quote for an agreed value policy that matched the appraised value.

Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

Hagerty is what I use. Easy to work with, great annual rate for my FB, agreed valve coverage.

Keep in mind neither company allow daily driver usage for your classic car.

Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

I have mine insured on a stated value policy through State Farm based on an appraisal (my agent insisted I get it appraised).  I know that a friend of mine who is an All State agent sells Hagerty through his agency, which helps reduce the cost due to multiple lines if you have your home and other vehicles insured through All State.  Most other guys I know around here use Hagerty or another carrier whose name escapes me at the moment.  It might be a regional thing.  I only know the Grundy name from commercials during those car shows on Velocity, er Motor Trend, or whatever its called now.

Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

Hagerty, because that's what my insurance agent told me to do.  I have used him over 30 years for most insurance needs, and have seen him work through a few claims over the years.  He says Hagerty, and I write the check.  I trust the guy with proven experience.  He has old cars too.

Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

TKO...I too have State Farm for most of my insurance needs.  They have always offered "Stated Amount" policies and they have started to offer "Agreed Value" coverage on classics in the last few years. There is a big difference between Agreed Value and Stated Amount so if, in fact you are carrying Stated Amount on your classic you need to discuss the differences with your agent.
I started the Heap with Hagerty when we bought it back in '05 as I believe SF only offered Stated Amount.  So far I've been happy.  Only had to use them once for a tow job but the service was quick and friendly.  I've jacked the value on the Heap a few times over the years and they never asked for an appraisal...just pix.

I'll send him an email, thanks for the heads up.  He's been my agent for 15 years or more at this point.  Office is 5 minutes from my house and I know where he lives (because I did some work on his house not because I contemplate the nefarious should anything happen, probably anyway...).  I also really should get it appraised again, because its now been 8 years and if anything with the upgrades and other stuff I've done its got to be worth more money now than it was back then.

Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

I’ve been with the same broker for my Mustang for over 20 years, Silver Wheels. The insurer  was Elite Insurance Company. They had an agreed value based on an appraisal which was upgraded every few years.
A few years ago Silver Wheels switched to Hagerty and I have not been asked for a new appraisal, the agreed value and premium have remained the same.
I have done may upgrades since the last appraisal but have neglected to bring it up tp date, guess I should look into it.

For the value of mine I relied on a local classic car appraiser. They wrote up a description and sent a bunch of photos to the broker.
This was about ten years ago, the agreed value at that time was coincidentally $45 k as well.
My premium is $365.00  cdn a year no mileage limitations and not to used as a daily driver.
I had always called them ahead of any of the many long distant trips down into the US for MCA shows and told them the car would be used as transportation for up to two weeks  vacationing after the show, never an issue.
I guess like regular car insurance the area of the district you live in determines the premium.

It depends on the policy.  The very cheap ones are going to be as limiting as possible.  Some used to be like to and from shows only, no driving at night, etc.  I can drive mine however I want, so long as I don't exceed 5,000 miles a year, which would take a literal miracle.  A banner year for me would probably be 2,000 miles.

Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

Hagerty, because most of my friends have it and speak very well of them, but none of my friends have had a claim either. 20K was $266.00 for the year. plus hagerty offers some other options for just a bit more money which I declined.

Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

For you guys that have modified your vehicle how did you explain that to the insurance company? When I was filling out the Grundy form they wanted to know things like expected horsepower, any modifications, etc.

Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

It gets kind of tricky, because you lose the ability for a direct comparison to similar vehicles to establish a value.  That's hard enough comparing a stock vehicle to another stock vehicle.  Saving receipts is a good way to do it.  In the end they have to insure it to where you could actually replace the vehicle if it were a total loss.  Granted, that's a LOT harder to do than it sounds.  I would discuss these things with an agent.  If possible do it over email so you have a record of it.  That way, God forbid, the worst happens if they try and crawfish you can prove what they said.  This is also why an appraisal is a good idea.

Re: Hagerty or Grundy and why??

The Bucket-O-Bolts is insured through Safeco on a agreed upon number. They did not require an appraisal but did require quite a few pictures. The policy is for comprehensive/fire/theft and liability along with under-insured coverage. No collision coverage on the Bucket (I have never carried collision on any vehicle I have had). I wreck it I pay. No limits on where/when or how much I drive, although Colorado does wish me to limit my driving to 5K/year due to the collector plates. An unenforcible limit, Bwahahaha.

That's who my neighbor used to use for his Malibu.  Not sure if he still uses them or not, but he used to rave about them.
