Nice 331 Test

As usual it's very light on details, but I think it shows how much power these "little" motors can make. That would make a great street motor dead simple and good power.

Re: Nice 331 Test

Basically the same engine I built for my '89 GT, but mine will be EFI.  Crane said 425-450HP at 6,500RPM based on the cam they sold me, so its encouraging to see that's easily achieved.  Those AFR 185 Renegades are awesome heads.  Almost too nice to bolt to an engine.  Also glad I bulletproofed my T5.

Re: Nice 331 Test

My 331 has a more street friendly cam, 9.1 cr and Edelbrock heads, wouldn’t have the slightest clue as to the hp and torque numbers.

In theory a point of compression is worth 10% increase in HP if everything is dialed in around it.  The AFRs are going to flow better than the Edelbrocks, especially the Renegade series.  If I had to guess I'd say 375ish.  Still very respectable at more than 1HP/cube.

Re: Nice 331 Test

Basically the same engine as my 331, except I used the stock HO roller cam, probably giving up 75-80 hp for better drivability.  Or, is it?

Re: Nice 331 Test

With suggestions from my machine shop I chose a Comp roller cam based more on lower end torque rather than high rpm.
I certainly think you are right in the assumption that the milder cams are more drivable in real world situations rather than a bump stick chosen for spectacular dyno results.

Re: Nice 331 Test

Not knowing what cam they used its tough to say how driveable it would be in the real world.  In my discussion with Crane when selecting the cam I used two of the important criteria were that it not throw the EFI into fits and that it made enough vacuum to run power brakes.  Consequently its ground on a wider LSA than Mike would prefer (either 112 or 114, can't remember off hand I'll see if I can track down the cam card, think its in the shop).  Its got some lift and duration, but nothing crazy.  The key to these combos are the AFR heads.  This is where the $600-$700 you are spending over a set of Edelbrock heads pays off.

Re: Nice 331 Test

I ordered a 21 Mustang a couple of months ago. It came in two weeks ago so to break it in I drove it from my house in southern Oregon to my brothers house in Northern Washington. With the specs for the 331 it seems the Coyote motor has similar numbers at 460 hp and 420 ft lbs. It has 12/1 cr.  The sticker says 24 hwy 17 town fuel milage. I was pleased when I ended with 28.1 with tail wind going north and 27.1 coming home with a head wind.

Re: Nice 331 Test

Don’t know how many Isky solid lifter cams they made.

Noticed the higher start rpm on graph.

From the article write up.

“ For this build Mike Arellano grabbed an Isky stick that spec'd out at 250/250 with lift of .512/.512, which is a solid flat tappet arrangement. Providing spark is an 8579 MSD Pro Billet distributor.”

Yes, but there is a LOT of electronic trickery to make all that happen.  How easy is that Coyote going to be to diagnose and repair 20 years from now when Ford's moved on to the next engine and starts to discontinue parts?

Summit lists 9, but doesn't include the 250 duration one listed in the article, so if say at least 10. The Isky website pretty much sucks, at least for me.

DITTO!^^^^^^^

This is why....6sal6 likes to look on different sites and find different grinds maybe 'listen' to some on Youtube compare several THEN I called Delta Cams butt Howard...Comp... most all cam companys will grind custom cams for the same price as their 'shelf-brand' cams.
And have them grind one just like I wanted! (They all give advice too when you ask about custom grinds and you give them your basic set-up)
Keep in mine....most of the shelf grinds are ALL based on a Chevy engine.
Jus throw'in it out there,

Re: Nice 331 Test

TKO that has been my concern on all the newer cars. I had a 2018 F150 and traded it in on the Mustang. I keep these newer cars and trucks three to five years and move on, meanwhile drive my 1966 Ranchero with a 302 I've had twenty years as a backup vehicle.

The newest vehicle I own is a 2007.  Something crazy happened in about 2010 and cars made after that seem like they went up another exponential level of complexity.  I don't know what the future ultimately holds for me, but I may just opt to keep buying clean, low mile older vehicles.  I can work on them and the insurance is cheaper, plus no payments.  Our '07 FJ Cruiser still only has 117k miles on it.  At the rate my wife drives my oldest will be in college before it cracks 200k.  My DD has 275k on it, but its an F250 Diesel.  Pretty sure it'll go to 500k if I just keep maintaining it and replacing the stuff that rusts off it.

Cam companies have a LOT of grinds not listed in their catalogs.  Often a "custom" grind is just an unlisted cam they don't deem popular enough or too similar to other offerings to list.  For fun I put the part number of a couple custom grinds I've had done over the years into Summit with the right prefix and they all came up, but they didn't come up when doing a search.  And yep, same price as an "off the shelf" cam.
