Shaved Inner Shock Towers

Do any of you guys who have shaved your shock towers above the upper control arm mounting bolt holes regret doing this, or would you do it again in a heartbeat? Since I've got the motor out of mine 69 I've been contemplating shaving those dang towers. Tell me what you think please.

Re: Shaved Inner Shock Towers

I did mine on the 66 to provide better wrench access to UCA nuts.
I can’t see it being as necessary in a 69, unless you have big headers?

I would definitely do it again.

I designed a tool to mark the humps so they were both removed in a single plane. Maybe you are talking about cutting the whole top half of the shock towers out, different than what I did?

Bottom line:  do what suits your needs

Re: Shaved Inner Shock Towers

I don't really know what you have in mind.  Can anyone post a photo showing a shaved tower in the fashion you mean?

I gave the tool away when I moved. Then I lost all my pictures of it and the process and end results when my computer crapped out.  Imagine a vertical plane that cuts through both humps. Flat plates  were cut and welded in, then blended so they appear stock.  I don’t think this is the type of mod Bearing Bob was thinking of on his car, though.

Re: Shaved Inner Shock Towers

Yup, that's the common look. Most are making the bottom horizontal cut 2 inches in, but my poor memory says MS might have only cut in only one inch. Steve do you have any memory of the depth of your cut? Any chance you can snap a few pics of your towers please?

Re: Shaved Inner Shock Towers

Any concern about those sharp angles creating any stress risers?  There must be a lot of stress over time given that cracked shock towers are sometimes found even if they didn't have a grease hole drilled or burned into them.  Of course, if a project car never really sees any miles then even weak areas probably wouldn't fail.

Re: Shaved Inner Shock Towers

So you flattened the camel humps on the towers.

How much removed?
Whole length or partial?

Here are some pics I found. I don’t know if you can what was done or not from these. Just removed two humps from the 65-66 towers.
