I'm going to have my windshield replaced and purchased a new gasket. The windshield guy told me that the gasket was wrong, so I called the supplier and they sent me out another. When I match both the gaskets up, they look the same.
Surely both can't be wrong, so I'm wondering if the windshield guy had a few when he came to do my car? He said when he tested the new gasket on the replacement windshield, it looked too small.
Does anyone have any idea on what's going on?

Did you get the replacement windshield or did he supply it?

It was a supplied windshield by the windshield company.
I supplied the gasket.

Is he familiar with 'ol-skool' windshields and the soft "putty-stuff" needed to do the install. THEN the chrome trim on top of that?!
If he's under 40......prolly not.
Good luck.
I agree.......what's the odds of TWO gaskets being too small?

Its got me wondering because I know there are different windshields available from the aftermarket now. Some are larger and are designed to be glued in for a flush look popular with the Chip Foose, etc. crowd. I'm wondering if he has the wrong glass.

He told me that he has multiple classic cars himself that he's restored, but who knows...

I'm at a loss on this one. I thought he got the standard windshield, but who knows.
Surely two windshield gaskets can't be wrong?
I might call the gasket supplier and see what they say. Maybe they have heard of this issue before.

That's always a good idea.

I recently replaced my windshield on 66 coupe
Used a windshield from "WINDSHIELDS TO GO ". Ordered online and picked it up
Was made in China Part# 740883. On Windshield labeled TriVal DW00654 Cost $125.00. Only differences from original Carlite was slightly thinner, but DOT approved. Used a Daniel Carpenter Seal #C5ZZ-6503110-R. Installed without issues.
Kentucky mustang shows the Seal. Windshield is listed as W654C for $170.00. I think this is the same as Windshields To Go, by looking at part numbers.
Carlites were unavailable.
SafeLite wanted over $400 for windshield not installed.
the seal in question could be dry fitted on windshield and also in car window frame
good luck

Why don't you let the installer bring his own gasket?

I have booked the guy in again. I think I heard him say that he may have gotten the wrong windshield.
Soooo... We will see how it goes second time around

Hmn, really...

The gasket always has to be stretched a bit to fit the glass. If he installs it without sealer covering the metal flange, send him home immediately. Messy, but the only way to make it seal 100%.

What MS says...a bead Non-hardening Butel (sp) MUST be laid on the pinch weld (flange) before setting the gasket/windshield assembly into the recess. Also the same goop must be shot into the glass channel in the gasket before assembling the gasket to the glass.
If it's done this way...carefully...you have a good chance it won't leak. If it's not done this way you have a VERY GOOD chance that it WILL leak. Thus far I've done two in the Heap and after leak-testing in some brutal Texas downpours...no leaks.
Good luck with the glass guy. Very few know how to proper set these old winshields/backlights.

Thanks guys. We are still working out what went wrong with the gaskets the parts supplier sent. They both seem to be too short.
Anyway, the windshield company are ordering the gasket this time and we will see how that goes.

While I'm waiting for this windshield gasket thing to sort itself out...
I wanted to remove the driver's side stainless steel trim and repair some dents.
It has been nearly 18 years since I took those out and can't remember how to gently remove them. Can I just remove the side piece on it's own?
Offline
IF I remember right.......the side pieces can be removed without removing the top and bottom pieces. (They ALL need to be removed to replace windshield though!)
I used a combination of a trim removal tool and a wide blade paint scrapper to get mine off. (I still struggled!)
My trim was really beat up and I managed to smooth and flatten it back to an acceptable shape.
NOT show quality butt........I don't have a show worthy car.
I haven't heard ANY....good reports about after market window trim.
Expensive & doesn't fit are the two main comments I've heard.
