Other than the GT40p heads....

Are there other heads like 289 or 351 heads that would be a power maker on a 289? Been trying to locate some GT40p heads close by but aint had any luck.

Its really me....I fixed my caps lock .

Re: Other than the GT40p heads....

Port those 289 heads to the max and run them.  The Early ones have the smallest combustion chamber to max compression ratio.  that gives the most power.  Then put in the largest valves you can. (you will not be able to go very large)

Other than that, your best bet will be one of the aluminum heads proliferating in the industry.

I agree.  I think if you run the numbers, the Edelbrock heads will win out.

Re: Other than the GT40p heads....

When I worked on cleaning up the ports on my 289 heads the “emissions bump”  water passageway core was so off kilter that I wonder why it didn’t leak on day one of its first start up in 1968.
The time, cost and effort to get it welded up, hardened seats, new valve guides and surfaced was not worth it so I just ordered the Edelbrocks.
It’s a good idea to talk to “those in the know” on making a plan for the final outcome of your engine build instead of just throwing new parts in it Willy-Nilly.
Making horse power needs to be a compatible combination of heads, cam, intake manifold,  carburetor  etc.
But, I’m not saying heads alone won’t be a slight benefit, like less weight.

Re: Other than the GT40p heads....

I would call to verify.  Edelbrock heads have been listed as sold each for a long time, but two heads always showed up in the box.  I don't think they sell assembled heads individually.

Re: Other than the GT40p heads....

They are sold individually and anyone who thinks you can purchase a pair of loaded alum heads for $900 is dreaming.

And so as to not prolong further discussion, I called summit and they verified these are listed and priced individually; as also noted in the description.

Re: Other than the GT40p heads....

I guess if a person got desperate and needed some heads now, one could search the lizzard lots for a set of E7TE heads.   The cc's vary a bit on them, but that would probably give you your most bang for your bucks, with hardened valve seats and such that could be one cleaned and prepped and installed quickly.

Just got to remember when you are mixing old blocks and newer heads you need to drill some holes.  Many have claimed they didn't and it worked out fine for them.   But Ford moved the steam holes to the side.

Look at the pic of the AFR head that is in another thread right here.  They solved the dilima with the grooved slot.

Re: Other than the GT40p heads....

Wow!  While I bought mine 15 years ago, I wouldn't have thought the price would have doubled.  Plus, the Summit site indicates expected delivery is June 2022.

When I got mine about that time I paid around 1200 cdn for both. Good old days again?

Re: Other than the GT40p heads....

Here's a link to Jegs:

$1,152/pair assembled.  Anticipated ship date is better too.  They used to be more like $999/pair.  The prices honestly haven't gone up that much in 20 years.

If Edelbrocks are the same price as AFR 185s, why would ya buy the Eddys?

You're catching on Billy. That sbf you have right now is enough for the stang. Run what ya brung and be happy. Me thinks too often we get caught up in the hoopla and before you know it, piles of money are thrown at unnecessary stuff. It's your daily driver so, tune it, and take care of all the safety items. Then, drive the piss out of it and have a smile for every mile....
