A couple of tips for engine bay painting

Drill 1/8” holes through parts to be removed, if they will require adjustment. My hood was perfectly aligned, and hood hinges are a pain to realign, so I drilled two alignment holes at the base of each hinge. Just stick a 1/8” cotter pin into the holes when reinstalling so no aligning is required. A dap of seam sealer and touch up of paint hides the holes.  Same trick works great on door and trunk hinges.

Remove the fender bolts and stuff 1/8” twine in the gap to raise the edge of the fenders off the inner fenders. This allows you to mask the fender and allows cleaning and paint under the edge of the fender. When you remove the twine and bolt the fender back tight, it appears they were removed for the job. It leaves alot cleaner edge than trying to mask the fenders.

When my hood buckled I didn't do that.  I spent a couple of weekends trying to get the new hood perfect.  It was a PIA!

Re: A couple of tips for engine bay painting

I'm going to go you one better on this.   Because when you are doing doors and trunklids the cotter pins don't want to stay in place.   So........here is what you do.   Get you some neodymium magnets.  Not the harbor freight kind, but the kind that have holes in the middle.   Use a nail or such that gives you the 1/8 pin, and the magnet both sticks to the door hinge and the nail.

Do NOT forget to put a piece of duct tape on the magnets!

Or for the tool freaks, I think Eastwood sells some but I'm not sure the are magnetic.

Edit:  these would be even better!  You can grip them.

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.
