Fiberglass trunk lid weatherstripping

Hey everyone I have a 66 mustang coupe that I just got a fiberglass trunk lid with molded in spoiler for. I am looking at installing the weather stripping and just to see how it would be I taped the new gasket in place and when I close it it seems really really tight.  Im kinda worried it is putting to much stress on the trunk lid and may crack it. Has anyone delt with this before?

When I was playing around with it. I just placed the weatherstripping in the groove around the trunk on the car and it closed perfectly.  Is the weatherstripping supposed to just sit in that Chanel or does it need to overlap some?

Re: Fiberglass trunk lid weatherstripping

Weatherstrip should be glued to trunk lid and interface with the raised edge on the body.

Scott Drake brand weatherstrip is typically harder and thicker and does not fit/close properly.

Of course, fiberglass parts are not known for proper fitment either.

This is just one of those situations where you have chosen to do a modification using non-stock parts and you will just have to work on it until you figure it out.  We have all been in that situation at some point.  Enjoy!   Then report what you did to fix the issue so it might help the next guy.

Re: Fiberglass trunk lid weatherstripping

I did the fiberglass deck with spoiler on my 66 coupe back some 12 years ago, let me go to my wayback machine and see what I did for the weather stripping, It might take me a day or two. Whatever I did it never leaked yet, I ll try and shoot some pics also.

Re: Fiberglass trunk lid weatherstripping

I ran into the same problem with my 67 ( aftermarket Shelby trunk lid).  Tried two different manufacturers of factory weatherstripping and it was always too tight if you wanted all the body lines and gaps to match up nicely.  I tried modifying these to no avail and finally went with an aftermarket weatherstrip that worked great.  If you search for this part number on Amazon

B077P632FC

You will see what I used.  It was very easy to work with (self adhesive) and had the compression that was needed.
This may or may not work for you, but it solved my weatherstrip issue.  The price made it worth the experiment.

Re: Fiberglass trunk lid weatherstripping

Well dug threw my files, (remember the ones with drawers)  I used the trunk seal that NPD sells, part # 43720-2. The trunk lid was from Meyer Racing, Sorry cant get any pictures to load up. Hope that helps you out.

Thanks everyone for the comments and advice. I’ll pick up a couple more and see how they fit and will report back with what worked.

Re: Fiberglass trunk lid weatherstripping

If these don't work out, try "Steele Rubber Products", they make/sell rubber & weatherstriping for cars, etc.

Re: Fiberglass trunk lid weatherstripping

Well I ended up going with the NPD weatherstripping part # 43720-2 that Jim Bowie recommended. It looks to be a bit softer than the Scott drake one I had so I think it will work. Just got done gluing it up. I’ll let y’all know how it ends up fitting once installed back on the car. But so far looks promising.

Re: Fiberglass trunk lid weatherstripping

All right just wanted to post an update. The weatherstripping worked great on the trunk and I got it to fit pretty good.  I had to adjust all the adjustments quite a bit to get it to fit good even the latch.  Overall I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

Thanks everyone I appreciate the assistance. On to the next project on the car.
