First Start

Getting ready to start the 5.0 with my efi conversion. All i have to do is add water to the radiator and put gas in the tank. Worked most of the day putting the exhaust back on. Never did like the way the tailpipes came out the back before, so i cut and welded, aligned them a lot better than they were,. Still have one a little too long.

I have everything hooked up as far as i can tell. Double checked the wiring, ran KOEO test. Have codes 84,95,67,81,82,85,95.  i did have the fuel pump unhooked as i did this.
Don't have the egr on the intake either.
Anything to doublecheck before i give it life?

Re: First Start

Yes...pull the coil wire and run the fuel pump for a couple of minutes using your eyes, fingers, and nose to check for fuel leaks.  THEN you can hook up the coil and spin it over.  Or you can leave the ignition off and jump the fuel pump relay but you don't want any cranking or sparking during this examination.
Good luck.

Re: First Start

After confiming that no leaks are present, pull out the distributor and work the oil pump with a drill for a couple of time.

Looks like you don't have the resistor pack installed to foul the ecm for the 81, 82, 84 and 85 soft codes.

95 is for the secondary fuel circuit and 67 goes away when you wire the clutch or starter NDS circuit.

Good luck,
Mustsed

Re: First Start

Sounds like TAB, TAD, EVP, and CANP are removed.
Definitely check fuel system for leaks and  fuel returning to gas tank.

I would disconnect the battery for 5-10 minutes, reconnect, and perform KOEO test again to verify those are only codes.

I would say fire it up …with an extinguisher ready of course.😁

Re: First Start

No fuel leaks, ran fuel pump till it pressurized. Ran the KOEO and got the same codes.
Will be too busy today baptizing grandchild #7 to do much else.

Re: First Start

Got back to it tonight, Filled the radiator, found out i didn't tighten the bottom radiator hose. Found a fitting on the back end of the intake leaking,  plugged that. Still had water dripping. Looks like it is coming from the back side of the water pump. Waited a while, thought maybe it was just some from the other leaks, but no, it is still dripping an hour later.
Pulled the distributer wire, cranked the engine for about 10 -  seconds. Got out and smelled gas. Have about half a pint of gas on the right side of the intake. Doesn't leak when pressurized, but sure did when i cranked it.
Frustrated, pushed it back in the shed and went for a walk.

Re: First Start

Turns out if you put all the o-rings on the injectors they don't leak, Somehow i had put the fuel rail on without the o- ring on top of #1 injector. Luckily i was able to take the bolts out of the right side, pull the rail up and see the o-ring was gone. Now, trying to figure out the water pump leak.
Oh and I did start it and it ran. Had a slight tick, must not have got it primed good enough, but the tick went away.
Now, need to set the timing and idle.

Re: First Start

Glad you got it going.  The frustrations tend to melt away once it runs.

Re: First Start

Glad you got it running. There will frustrations while you work the bugs out.

My first start resulted in fuel spewing onto the ground from the loose fitting on the outlet side of the fuel pump.

Re: First Start

Nice to hear, i just fired up my Sniper EFI install today. All went well until I test drove it and had a accident in the trunk with a jug of antifreeze and my taillight. Someone had installed U Hall aps on the tail lights and the turn signal one was un protected . Well I went around a corner and the jug stuck in the corner shorting out the lug and I smoked my new turn signal switch. I mean I saw a lot of smoke coming out of my wheel. What a day. But hey the EFI works great.

Slammed Big Blue, ran over the varmints that messed with the Stang. Now all is good in the NW

Re: First Start

That’s awesome, glad you found fuel leak Alan.
You know I was kidding about firing it up…right? 😁

Looks like your fix is pretty straight forward Chris 😜.
No more junk in your trunk.
