For the first time in decades, I'm replacing my door panels. I have several questions. And, yes, I know this has been a topic recently. As good as that solution is, I'm not into finding magnets and making a new mounting system. I do not take them off very often.
I got a kit for the clips and had to get a second bag that has like 4 rubber squares that fit on the clips. What are the rubber thingies for and which clips do they go on?
One mounting hole on the door is smashed in so the clip will not engage. (Don't know when that happened) Can I just forget it? I just installed sound deadener and would have to remove it to get behind the hole. It is the one at the upper rear of the door. I know nothing about sheet metal work, but as the hole will be hidden, maybe I could use a screw driver or something to pull it out.
The clips are new because the old ones have become rough to the touch and do not go in easily. Will a light coat of grease to both the clips and the holes help installation?

I’m not sure what year Mustang you have but my experience with 65-66 models is that the ‘rubber squares’ (I believe) are to stop any potential rattling. I installed both with and without these and can’t say I’ve had any rattling. As far as I remember, these rubber squares were on all the clips.
Leaving out any of the clips could very well allow the panel to not hold tight to the door. I suggest fixing the area.
For years, I’ve placed grease on these clips in hopes of making it easier to install and, mainly, to remove the panel w/o damaging the panel with limited success. Applying the grease certainly can't hurt anything.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
