Latest project (non mustang) Isuzu/Chevy/Toyota hybrid…

Picked up a project that has been sitting 30+ years.
A Chevy Luv with a Toyota 18R-GU engine swap.  It has been keeping me busy while my Mustang is at the paint shop.

The engine is a bit of a unicorn in the US.  The 18R-GU is a DOHC 2.0L with dual 40mm Mikuni side draft carburetors from the Toyota assembly line in the 1970’s.  Got it running a few weeks ago.  Got the cooling system sorted last weekend.  Took it for a short drive yesterday.  There is some merit to that engine, it pulls pretty good at high RPM.

Figured it was weird enough to share, and any secret Toyota enthusiasts on the forum might get a kick out of it.

I don’t know much about either part.

I think it’s cool to breathe life into projects like that.

Manual transmission too?

Definitely interesting.  I wonder what the origin of that swap was?  Most LUVs I've seen swapped ended up with a, yawn, SBC.

The Luv belonged to a buddies father.  The old man Lou had a transmission shop on I5 in California right next to several mountain  passes.  One is the Siskiyous pass with the highest elevation pass on I5 (4,311 ft)- it is higher than the Coquihalla pass up in Canada.

Story was in the late 80’s a tow rig for a “race team” blew its transmission on the Siskiyou pass.  Lou rebuilt the transmission in trade for the engine.  I don’t know how much of the story is BS.  The engine was used overseas in some Celicas and Coronas.  That was also when grey market Japanese engines were plentiful in the US from importers like Rising Sun Engines.

Somewhere around 1990 Lou swapped the Toyota engine into his Chevy Luv shop truck.  Lou wanted to see how fast the LUV would go and went for a speed run on one of the flat sections of the highway.  California highway patrol clocked him somewhere over 100mph and were not pleased.  Apparently the CHP was curious how he got that 79’ Luv to that speed, looked under the hood and ticketed him for not having emissions equipment (a big deal in CA, you have to go to a SMOG “referee”).  That was the end of it being on the road and it had been parked under some oak trees since.

I have wanted to tinker with that truck ever since I was in high school.  Lou would never let his son mess with it when we were kids.  I finally got the chance to dink around with the truck and have been enjoying it.

Unfortunately - No.
I need to find a 1972-1975 Chevy LUV and swap the parts over.

Got the Mikunis sorted today.  It is amazing how small the accelerator pump nozzles are compared to Holley.
