Currently I have 12.5 at the battery, and at the solenoid. Then on the starter side of the solenoid I have 10.8 while cranking. Is this normal. I also get the same 10.8 on the I terminal at the same time. I thought I should have 12 going out of the solenoid while cranking? Cables are all new
Am I missing something here?

That's good as long as the engine is turning over and starting normally. This is why cars used to use a +- six volt coil for normal running....think pink wire...and apply full battery voltage during start up...think brown wire from the solenoid "I" terminal to the coil. That way during start up, especially in cold weather, the coil would receive enough voltage to reliably start.

When you throw a load on the battery the voltage output drops. If its cranking over fine I wouldn't worry about it. If you are getting a slow crank it means the battery is on its way out.

Just for info, JKB just had a situation where his Coupe battery showed 12+ static but was dropping to 5-6 volts upon attempted start. He couldn't even notice a solenoid click....just nothing. Stuck in a known good battery and all was fine. That's what's called a "load test" on a battery.

OK just checking. She starts just fine, battery is new, but I wanted to be sure as Holley says you need 12v in cranking start mode for the Sniper.

Even a brand new, healthy battery won't show 12 volts at cranking. You might see something in the low 11s, but dropping to the upper to mid 10s is more the norm IME. I wouldn't worry about it.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
