Since we have had several questions about electrical systems…
On first generation Mustangs, what protects the wire from starter solenoid to the fuse box?
Let’s also assume the factory 1G alternator and all wiring stock from factory.

Smoke! If you let it leak out the wire will not work.

These early system alternators put out like 30-40amps, the wire from starter solenoid is a #10 wire that can carry 30amps for an extended period of time. I'm guessing that car companies banked on the likelihood of a short circuit didn't warrant additional fuse/circuit breaker protection ... and it appears they were right.

Not totally true.
One of my temporary/permanent repairs for over 20 years was the replacement of this wire from starter solenoid to interior.
In the engine compartment, there were signs of wire overheating with slightly deformed insulation.
However, under the dash I found this partially melted wire with brittle insulation.
It looped through my ammeter (‘65 inductive) and feeds the fuse box.
I was cleaning up connections and trying to figure out where my voltage drop was occurring BEFORE it made it to the fuse box.
I learned 2 things while repairing it:
1) disconnect the battery….under dash welding next to my arm at night. Caught my attention quickly.
2) pay attention to direction of wire feed through induction ammeter
