Looking to drive a 90s OBS Truck, Crew Cab

I'm in the market for a new truck but don't want to pay new truck prices.  I'm kicking the tires on buying a Ford F-350 Crew Cab.  I've never driven one and have no idea how the fit and drive compares to a modern truck.  I just think they look cool and my dad had a 1990 F-150 growing up that I have fond memories of.  Anyone have or know someone who has one and would let me drive around a bit?  I'm in Dallas and willing to drive in the region.  This isn't so much for me as for my wife.  She has veto power on all my purchases and I'm trying to sell her on buying an old truck.

thanks

Joe

Re: Looking to drive a 90s OBS Truck, Crew Cab

What year F-350 are you looking at?
The F-350 is a one-ton model and these are typically for commercial use and are sprung for heavy duty hauling and use.  I would think the ride would be harsh compared to a F-150.

65 Fastback, 351W, 5-speed, 4 wheel discs, 9" rear,  R&C Front End.

That’s a honking big truck, should have no issues pulling a trailer with a D9 cat on it..

F-350 was the only 92-97 OBS that had the full crew cab. It's also available in gas.  These have become popular for heavy mod crowd but i'm looking for a stock setup.  None have that chip shortage related crap.   I just want to drive one for half hour with the kids in the back to get a feel and listen to my wife complain about the terrible turning radius and lack of bluetooth.

Re: Looking to drive a 90s OBS Truck, Crew Cab

As I recall, all crew cabs had long boxes.

Back in late 90’s, a Navy buddy had a 95 extended cab F150, it rode nice.
He just had the 5.0L in his truck.
I helped him install a Flowmaster exhaust in the driveway, sounded nice afterwards too.

97 was the last year of OBS but only available in 3/4 and 1 ton.
97 1/2 ton went to new body style. 🤮
Not sure which cabs were available during that last year.

Re: Looking to drive a 90s OBS Truck, Crew Cab

I drive an '06 extended cab with an 8' bed every day.  Many, many times I've been reminded how smart I was not to buy the crew cab.  U-turns without backing up?  Not happening.  Parallel parking?  Better have enough room for a cargo ship.  These trucks are REALLY big.

In terms of overall quality it depends what you want to do with it.  If you want to two something serious buy a newer truck.  In this generation the 150-350 were the same truck.  Same frame, just heavier springs and different axles and engine options.  The frames are fairly flimsy.

The transmissions in this generation are not great for towing either.  E4OD/4R100.  Heavy and expensive, but weak.

Engine wise you could get a 7.3PSD, but they often command an unreasonable premium.  I think you could still get a 460, but for that you'll need the Exxon Valdez to follow you around.  351 was still available, but if you tow you'll definitely want the Diesel.

IMO its a big expense in terms of maintenance and fuel just to cruise around.  If you want to two something, buy a newer Super Duty.  It just outclasses the older trucks in basically every regard.

I've built/rebuilt them, but my point is more that the 5R110 that came in the next generation truck is just an inherently better trans.

I'd rather drop $25k on a nicely restored truck like this than to drop $45k on an F-150 with a bunch of gadgets and gizmos that are going to stop working as soon as the warranty expires and be worth half what I paid for it 4 years later.  Plus I can work on any old V8 problems that doesn't involve pulling the motor.  With modern cars you basically have to have a computer programming degree to work them.

Re: Looking to drive a 90s OBS Truck, Crew Cab

I know I'm probably the only one here.... but I had to look up "OBS".  Found that it is short for Old Body Style and refers to the boxy bodies from the 90s.
...anyway, back to the regularly scheduled programming

1968 T-code Coupe with a 302.  Nice car, no show stopper for sure, but I like it.

Re: Looking to drive a 90s OBS Truck, Crew Cab

For me it depends what you plan to use the truck for, I sold my 2018 F150 coyote back to a Ford dealer for close to what I paid. I then bought a 1994 F250 460 with 137,000 miles for $7500. It was garaged all the time and has original paint in great condition. I have three trailers horse, dump and car. I moved recently 50 miles and used all three for the move. Empty the truck gets 14 mpg, the heaviest trailer loaded up to 10,000 gets 10 mpg. My move without the truck would have been a lot more expensive even with the higher price of gas. I only use the truck occasionally not as a daily driver.

I'll certainly 'drink-to-that'!!
Hard to believe "we" have let modern stuff ' progress' (is that what it's called?)... to the point
that the average fella can't fix his own stuff.
