1970 Mustang with TILT wheel cann't start, key will not turn ?? What 's going on? Origonal key used for years and worked just fine

I had a friend that got stuck at a car cruise (40 Ford Hot Rod) with an ignition switch that wouldn’t turn. After another friend helped him remove the switch, they tried it again and it started right up. It was then that he realized he was using the wrong key.

Steve, if it has a steering wheel lock did you try turning the wheel a bit to unload the lock?

The 70 has a shaft between the key mechanism and the ignition switch. The shaft has a pin through it that helps transfer the torque to turn the shaft.
Under the steering column is a metal sleeve that holds the plastic cover on the column, between the steering wheel and the dash.
The shaft can get disconnected, and the switch itself can fail. Last time I dealt with this, the switches were not reproduced and very rare to find a replacement. Remove the plastic column cover and you will likely find the problem.
Also, on manual trans cars, the steering wheel lock, usually disconnected by 1971, can get rotated causing things to not work right. Try rotating the collar between the wheel and the column. It controls the wheel lock and ignition lock.
