Re: Carb cars vs. EFI cars

The cam doesn't care, BUT there are a few things to consider:

1.) What firing order do you want it to have?   Ford made the move to the 351 order for a reason.  I'd stick with that.

2.) Do you need a reduced base circle cam?  Some strokers with typical nut and bolt rod bolts have clearance issues with the bolts and the cam, so they require the use of a reduced base circle cam.  If the rods are capscrew this should be a non issue.

3.) Are you running EFI or a carb?  A cam for an EFI application will typically be ground on a wider LSA so the computer has an easier time getting it to idle acceptably. Most EFI cams are ground on a 112-114 LSA, even for a performance grind.  A cam for a carb application could be as tight as 108.  You may get a lumpier idle, but can still tune the carb to run acceptably.

What is the effect of LSA on idle vacuum?  For those with power brakes

Re: Carb cars vs. EFI cars

Howard’s had recommended a LSA of 112 .
It’s a standard bore but changing the pistons to flat top not gonna be a stroker just a 1998 Explorer engine with flat tops and the GT40P heads with a performer intake and 570 Holley avenger carb . Petronix 3 distributor also Hi-po manifolds. TKO how do I know about the small circle cam you mentioned?

Re: Carb cars vs. EFI cars

The Howard’s cam was a 221275-12 and was a 270/278 and 528/533 wanting something close to that it can be in a different brand if I can find one. Howard’s are having trouble finding blanks to grind.

If its not a stroker don't worry about it.

What's wrong with the stock pistons if it's a standard bore? Are not stock pistons flat tops with valve reliefs in them? What change are you expecting with different pistons?
