    Smooth window operation on 70 M1

    When I crank the windows up or down they make a popping and groaning noise. What can be causing that?  The vertical guides are lubed and the pivot points and rollers are also oiled. There appears to be some sort of coil spring in the mechanism. Could that be it??    Thanks!

    Yuuuuup, that’s it. You need to pack the spring when it is loose. Then wind it up and down and put more in it. Then wipe the excess off so it doesn’t get all over the inside the door.

    Both windows go up and down real smoothly. There is no noise in the right window at all but there is on the drivers side. No matter what I have done there still is a little noise. The best I can describe it is that it sounds like the spring is stretching. A new spring might be needed

    On a 70, as with any other old Mustang, the front and rear tracks need to be running parallel. If they are out of plane with each other, the glass gets in a bind as they travel up and down. So, if someone tilts the front track trying to make the glass fit tighter against the seal, and did not also tilt the rear track the same amount, it will bind up.

    Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.
