Hi all:
Have a 1965 6 cyl 200 ci manual 3 speed and just had an oil change with filter. The receipt states 5 quarts added. When I look at the fill stick the level is about 5/8 inch over the fill line marked on the stick.
Should I leave it alone or drain a bit out?
Thanks
Robert

Though I'm not familiar with the dipstick on a 200 I6, that sounds like a lot of extra oil to me. Too much oil can cause a big mess and may cause damage to the engine. IMO, I'd drain off a couple of quarts into a clean pan. Check the level and either drain off more or pour some back in as required to make it right.

Like BB, I would not let it go. You mention you have a receipt, so I assume the car has been run since the oil has been changed, and the filter is full. I also assume you know it has the correct dipstick in it...
If it's not to far, I would take it back to the shop and let them deal with it, and make it right. A quick google search seems to indicate that the 200-6 may well use about 4.5 quarts, not 5, so there is the discrepancy.
An oil change place probably has a pump, and can suck out a half quart through the dipstick tube, and make everything right.

Only drove about 2 miles home from the shop that did the oil change. Figured the extra oil wasn't good but was hoping it was OK just to leave it in there. Will drain off the excess to be safe.
Thanks for all the replies and advice.

Another possibility: the dipstick is wrong, and they added the right amount of oil. If you have changed your own oil in the past, and added the correct amount and KNOW that the dipstick is correct - that's the only way to be sure. I have had at least a few old cars where the previous owner replaced the dipstick with some unknown replacement - I had to re-mark those to the correct level. I also had at least one where the dipstick tube had been cut down about an inch - so that one would read overful even when the right amount of oil was in the pan. Just something to consider before you just drain out some of your oiul.

From the 1966 Ford Service Manual, the 170 and 200 6-cylinder engine takes 4.5 quarts of oil, including the oil filter. Make sure they used the right size oil filter; some filters are half the size and will hold less oil.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
