Does anyone know whether the larger air filter increases horsepower by allowing more air in?
If it did, I wouldn't expect much, but was curious to know.Cobra air cleaners add eye candy to the engine compartment, not horsepower.
Copy that! They do look nice 🙂

Don’t forget electric fans. Those free up at least 60 hp
Ha, ha... 😆
I will NEVER fit an electric fan on mine. NEVER, EVER...

I forgot to ask if the cobra air cleaners clash at all with the curved Monte Carlo bar? I figured they put the curve in the bar to clear the air cleaner, but just wanted to be sure.

The curved bars were originally designed to clear the water inlet manifold for Weber carbs, but it also fits great with the Cobra air cleaners.

Showing the curved Monte Carlo bar.
66 with 351w based 427, Weiand Stealth intake with Holley and the riser cut off the bottom of the air filter base. Has 1/4” clearance to hood bottom. 1.8” filter thickness

Thanks! The cobra filters certainly to look great. I reckon I will get one, but with the standard 289 in mine, I'm certain the 3" tall filter will fit mine.

The 3” clears in my 69, with 331 and normal height intake, but I don’t think it would in a 65/66. I will find out when I put the 3x2 setup on my 65.

Thanks for letting me know. I may just go with the smaller filter to be safe.

Hey Joe, where ya goin' with that air filter in your hand?
On my 289 with Eddy Performer 289 intake, Eddy 3/8" heat isolator, Eddy 1406 (Holley 1850 too) and 14" x 3" air filter assembly (Eddy top and a near flat base from another filter) it barely cleared the Duraspark distributor (large cap).
The filter housing base stopped at the rear of the large cap distributor.
I shifted my distributor gear 1 tooth so #1 wasn't at 12 o'clock position..after determining my timing.
Had it like that for over 25 years with no problems.
Hope this is useful TL.

I really love your air filter in this picture Rudi and think this is the style that I will go with.
Did you paint the red trim on yourself? It looks awesome and different 👍
I might look at adding the light blue trim to mine, if that suits.
Why do some air cleaners have two wing nuts?

All original cobra air cleaners were made with two nuts because they were for dual four barrel carbs. The first GT500’s in 68 even used those with a single wing nut on undrilled dual quad tops. They never came with a single nut from Shelby. All the ones with single hope are aftermarket creations. Ami prefer the double version as it clamps the top down better on the filter. But the single is easier to remove.

Thanks! I see that there are different options with the single wing nut. You can get one with the horse and one with the word Mustang and one that is just plain.
The two wing nut option may look better and work better though...

I don't know how Steve did his air cleaner but wnen I did mine I masked off all the parts I did not want red then shot it with body colour.
The aluminum shiny sections were polished prior to painting.
The nut was turned on a lathe with a Mustang emblem fastened to it.

Sorry Rudi, I thought that was Steve's air cleaner. I got confused between the two red Mustangs.
I really like what you did with the color. The red matches the color of your car nicely and makes it look quite unique.
Thanks for showing how you masked it up. I think I will follow your queue on this, but my car is a light blue and I am not sure how that will look with the black.

No problemo, yes it is a lot of masking and a lot of red paint used on whole cover with not much showing after the tape removal.
I suppose it could be brushed on but I like sprayed finish better.
I still regret not doing the whole engine bay body colour.

Even with all that work or masking up and painting, I reckon it was well worth it.
I'm now torn over whether to get the cobra or horse... Anyone have an opinion on this?

My rocker covers are Cobra so therefore the Cobra air cleaner.

Makes sense...
Are you happy with the one bolt air cleaner, as opposed to the two?

I got a K&N filter for mine too.

yes its the cobra oval...I had got some Cobra valve covers too. I did paint the engine dark blue. I know it supposed to be black engine in a 65 but the black on engine dont look good to me at all.

I have a single carburetor ergo, one bolt. It is solid and does not go askew. Never had 2 bolt air cleaner would so I can’t compare.

Good to hear Rudi!
I've ordered mine and went with the plain type. I also ordered a pony emblem, with the 289 on it and will stick that on the front.
I figured this will match my car best as I don't have cobra stuff on it.

My theory on this choice is that I will only use an air cleaner like could have come from the factory. That means only a plain one with center raised ribs for 2x4 or 3x2 setup, or COBRA with two hold-down holes, or the one with the Thunderbird on it.
The one with the horse looks cool, but just not original. I guess my main experience with this stuff results from hunting down original or over-the-counter parts many years ago, before all the “cute” parts came out that sort-of replicate what the real stuff looked like. You should install what you like, not what we like. I just don’t care for the modern stuff that never was ever issued from the factory and has no historical significance.

I got mine from Tony Labranda it seems to be good quality.
