Gas Cap Guard

I currently have the gas cap guard as shown in the attachment.
I've been wanting to swap to one that is just round, without the side pieces.
Does anyone know of any around?

Re: Gas Cap Guard

I have never seen a round one.  Nor have I, in 50+ years of Mustang ownership, ever had any damaged paint around my gas filler. Is this just to have more stuff on your car? or what?

Re: Gas Cap Guard

There were round ones available once, apparently...

I put mine on about 18 years ago to protect the paint, but maybe it looks like crap and I should just toss it?

Re: Gas Cap Guard

Well, that round one is better than the wide one, but my eye says it will make the gas cap look bulky. Please don’t make your decision based on my opinion. It is for your car, not mine.

That's ok... I'm tending to agree with you. I have been feeling that the guard looks like it should go along with the luggage rack option, which I'm definitely not into.
This week I have removed the guard, am polishing up the rear panel and will just have the cap. So far... I can't see any paint fade or marks, so it is looking good.
If I change my mind, I can always put the guard back, but I somehow don't think I will 🙂

Re: Gas Cap Guard

Stack 2 of the cork filler neck gaskets together, insert the filler neck and screw it down. That extra space keeps the gas cap from potentially rubbing on the tail light panel paint.

I think that's what made me put the guard on originally (18 years ago). I had the original non locking cap and it would rub on the metal. I was always worried someone would try and stick something down the filler neck, so I went with the lockable type and the rubber seal on that holds it well and truly away from the body.

Re: Gas Cap Guard

I removed the guard and feel that it looks much better without. Unlike the original cap, this one has a rubber gasket and the cap sits out from the body a decent amount.

Ok, now… about the cap itself…

Well, as far as I know and please correct me if I'm wrong... This is the only lockable cap on the market. Not my favourite and I wish they made one with the more traditional Mustang emblem with some red, white and blue on it.
Going for the original cap, with the spring locking rod is not what I want to do as unlocking the trunk each time to fill up would send me nuts.
