Kickdown rod for 65 289/C4

So, when I drove the car home from my late brother in law's place, I noticed it had no passing gear. Come to find out that there is no kickdown rod installed! I don't know why he never installed it, but I need one now. The carb linkage appears to be correct per my restoration guide, but I have googled the number shown on the accelerator linkage diagram of 65 Mustangs with a V-8 - P/n 7A187, but the rod seems to be made of unobtainium for that year.  Does anyone know of a work around or an alternate rod that I could use or modify?

Do you have the bell crank assembly on the intake manifold?

Re: Kickdown rod for 65 289/C4

7A187 is only the partial number that identifies the part as an automatic transmission kickdown rod or cable. The prefix and suffix identify which particular engine, transmission and body style the kickdown rod/cable fits. Here is a C5OZ-7A187-A kickdown rod but I have no idea which engine/transmission/body it fits. Do you have the complete part number for the '65 289/C4/Mustang kickdown rod? I guess you can call these folks and ask.

As many folks as there are who are converting from the C4 to a T5 I would think a Wanted ad here or other Mustang sites would generate a response.

Re: Kickdown rod for 65 289/C4

Unless you just want to make it original, I much prefer the 66 style kickdown which eliminates all that stuff on the intake manifold, greatly simplifying things.
It has a lever on the accelerator pedal assembly that pulls a short cable which pulls a short lever on the side of the tranny.
And the parts are much easier to come by, and they work better.

Yes. Bellcrank is there.

If I can’t find a rod then I will definitely look into that configuration

Re: Kickdown rod for 65 289/C4

Anyone ever try this item? Looks to be a bolt on to the throttle/pedal arm in order to use the cable for kickdown.

Might be an easy way to get my kickdown working.

That bolt-on arm was used on 6 cylinder cars. '66 V8 cars had a similar arm that was welded to the throttle linkage and there was no bellcrank bolted to the intake. '66 cars (I6 & V8) had a cable instead of the rod used in '65.
You can see the welded arm on '66 throttle linkage here:
