Replaced pinion seal on the 9” in my 69

The yoke has a steel shim spacer so no adjustment was required. Took all of twenty minutes.

THEN MustangSteve LAW KICKED IN.

I went to remove the fill plug so I could refill with new oil.  It is an aluminum pipe plug with a female allen hex in it.  Except the hex stripped out. Easy-out only made the hole round inside. If it had been a steel plug I would have welded a washer and then a nut to it.  But… aluminum.

I drilled and tapped the plug, while still in the car, using lots of red grease to catch chips. A 7/16” fine thread bolt and a copper washer finished it off.  I actually like it better than a pipe thread plug as far as ease of removal.

In all my years I’ve only seen an aluminum pipe plug on aircraft, on cars only steel, cast iron and brass.

Not really mean for use in cast iron pumpkins...

Wow, an aluminum pipe plug?!  Yeah, never seen such an animal on anything automotive either.  Sounds like someone needs a spool gun for his MIG.  Welding aluminum isn't terribly hard, just make sure the parts are super clean (stainless wire brush, then acetone), and a little preheat with a propane torch to like 350 helps too.  On the first day of Christmas Mrs. MS gave to MS...

Don’t forget the additional cost of a bottle of Argon. I’d have had an Al. Spool gun years ago if it weren’t for that.

Re: Replaced pinion seal on the 9” in my 69

That aluminum plug came in that new SPEEDWAY rear chunk.  The fix I made does not leak, but the new seal does.  Apparently the OD of the yoke is machined too small.

It will need a repair sleeve to get it to stop leaking.

MustangSteve’s LAW is, once again, proven.

Curious the origin of the yoke and seal.  I had a Yukon seal that leaked in the 500 miles between the rebuild and oil change in my 10.5.  The yoke was a brand new Ford part.  The seal, I found after removal said "China" on it.  I went to my local NAPA and picked up an SKF seal (made in Germany) and 5,000 miles later not a drip.  If Speedway is sourcing cheap seals that may be the issue.  Of course, if they are also sourcing cheap yokes...

Yeah.  I own all my bottles, except for the tri mix I have for welding stainless.  I rent that for less than $7/month.  That's always an option.  Not sure what cylinders are costing now.  They were $90 for a small one 20 years ago.  Probably outrageously priced now like most things, or impossible to get because they are made in China or Malaysia or somewhere with shipping and supply chain issues.

Re: Replaced pinion seal on the 9” in my 69

Update on the leaking yoke

There must have been some gear oil hiding in the seal cavity, or the seal finally mated to the existing yoke

I drove the car about three miles yesterday and it is no longer leaking!  So, now I have a $35 repair sleeve and a gallon of new gear lube unopened that I don’t need.  When the weather clears off I will go for a longer drive on the highway to be sure.

Re: Replaced pinion seal on the 9” in my 69

Update on the update.  I took the potential purchaser of the 69 for a ride in the car.  After, we put it up on the lift to check out the underside.  The seal was leaking a very small amount.  I purchased a new seal and will install the repair sleeve in a few days. I told him he could not buy it if something was wrong with the car.

MustangSteve’s LAW is alive and well!
