Anybody have any Good suggestions for aftermarket seats that fit a1966 Mustang, preferably cloth? Not interested in seats from a newer stock Mustang.

I'm with Bentworker. Recaro is the way to go. I've had mine since 1983. Several hundred thousand miles later and a couple of re-upholsters of the driver seat, I can comfortably drive thru a full tank of gas and not have a sore butt. Passengers often comment on how comfortable they are. Not cheap, but you should not need another set any time soon.

LMR makes a brand new seat that mimics the Foxbody seats. Not a bad price for a pair:

Those look pretty good but they, apparently, do not have the power lumbar support. I rebuilt a set of 89 Fox seats and covered them with TMI upholstery in the 66 Pony pattern. Also installed all new TMI foam. We have around 40K on them and have done a number of 400 mile days and a few over 500 without complaint.
I know you said you didn't want any later model Mustang seats but, honestly, you could do worse for a driver. If you are going racing, well, that's a different story, I guess.

I was looking at them this morning. I looked at the prices and it appeared that their pricing for a pair of seats just about the same as everyone else. And then I realized that was an each price. Most other vendors price their seats per pair.

Yeah, they are definitely spendy, but I do believe you get what you pay for. Recaro is an OEM supplier, and I don't think any other aftermarket seat company can claim that. So the design and materials are on par with an OEM seat. Another factor is that Recaro has 3 factories (Germany, USA, and Japan). Most of the other stuff you buy is going to be made in China.
I will say I love mt TMI sport seats, but I think they are only available in vinyl and possibly leather. I didn't mind because the car had a vinyl interior from the factory, so I was just keeping it period correct. I went with TMI because they had seats with horizontal pleats. Every other one I saw was vertical. All the pleats in a '67 are horizontal, and I wanted seats that looked like they belonged.

I seem to recall that somewhere, eons ago, I hear or read that the Fox GT seats were made by Recaro. Just saying.

It would not surprise me, because the style of those seats is very similar to other OEM seats, which I know were made by Recaro. In fact, thinking about the Recaros in a BMW 3 series Alpinia built around the same time as the Fox cars the primary difference is that the BMW seats were covered with leather. The layout and adjustment for both seats as I'm thinking of them seem to have been identical.

I once flew to Cuba on an Air Transat plane that had leather Recaro seats.
I doubt if you could go to Victorville and get surplus one even though there are thousands of them there.

There are cars you can harvest non-airbag Recaro seats from, but they are hard to find. Best source is a 1980’s BMW 320is. Used to be able to find them in the junkyards 20 years ago, but now they are hard to find. If you research used Recaro seat pricing you might come to the same conclusion I did and just buy new. They seem to hold value.

I like the Recaro Expert seat. I do not like the price.
I am looking at something less expensive. I am considering the Procar Elite Lumbar DLX. Price for one black velour seat with tax, shipping and 5% off is $659.00.
The price for one Cloth Recaro Expert with tax and shipping from Summit Racing is $1,652.00. Ouch!

That's about what I paid for my Mach 1.

I'd research reviews on those seats. If they are good then I would probably buy them.

Yeah, I hear you. Reviews look good.
The velour seat cloth makes me think of the this:

If you are still kicking around the idea of Recaro seats try calling some Recaro Dealers. I bought mine from Griffin Motorwerke in Berkeley CA. You should be able to get plain old experts for 1200 ish. They also carried direct fit seat adapters of good quality.
Also if you are West Coast I am smack between SF and Portland if you want to sit in some.

Sitting on my butt in Scottsdale,AZ(Phoenix,AZ). I have spent my ransom share of 1966 Mustang related items in the last year. I am spending more than I am earning, since I am retired. I am trying to scale back, but sometimes I cannot help myself and get carried away. I have not ordered from anybody else yet, and know Recaro is the way to go for a soft/comfortable ride. But am I willing to spend that money? I wish I could sit in a Recaro and a Procar seat! I already know the outcome. But is it worth the extra(double) money?

Thanks. I just can't justify the cost at this time.

Then maybe the smart play is to keep what you have for now and look to upgrade later. There's a saying I live by in my business and often share my customers at times: There's never enough money to do things right the first time, but there always seems to be enough to do it twice. Not trying to push you one way or the other, or make any statement about how you are building your car, literally just food for thought.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
